The problem I think for him is he doesn't have full purifial vision. He can see strait ahead and to the side of his left eye. However, he cannot see out the side of his right eye. He can only see ahead of him in his right eye. How does this effect him in airlines as a pilot? Can he still fly? Could he be a copilot and just work on operating buttons but not acually have to fly the plane for full time? Or if he can't fly an airline plane can he fly a smaller aircraft?

He needs to go an FAA certified Medical examiner and take a physical. The results will determine what class of physical he may hold. His pilot rating will depend on his physical. Pilots certificates (licenses) don't expire, only physical certificates must be renewed. In some instances, a wavier for certain medical conditions may be obtained from the FAA. As far as Co-Pilot goes; No, if he can't pass the physical for the pilot rating, he can't be a Co-Pilot either.

Copilots spend just as much time flying as captains. Both crew members are fully rated pilots and are fully capable of flying the airplane. The designation of captain simply refers to the chain of command and the decision making process. Captains typically have more flight experience than their first officers, but that is by no means a prerequisite for the position.

The other main distiction is that the captain is the one who signs the paperwork. Both pilots read it and review it, but the captain is the one with the authority over the origination or termination of the flight.

I agree with the first answer, but make sure you ask for a 1st class medical. Too pass the medical he must have 20/20 vision (can be corrected), not color-blind (to fly at night), and normal field of vision. Before you go to an aviation medical examiner, go to a normal eye doctor. If he fails the aviation medical it will be on his perment FAA records.

a medical is not very expensive. do a search on google for FAA med examiners in your area. then if he can get cleared from there go find an airfield and start training!
