Traditionally, men bought the ring before they proposed. So they got one in their price range that they thought their girl would love, probably something they loved too.
It's a good thing because it's a romantic surprise to the woman, and she knows that he took the time to find her the perfect ring.
It's a bad thing because it may not be something that she agrees is perfect for her.
Now, many men decide to propose then go ring shopping as a couple.
It's a good thing because both people have a say in what the ring looks like, and since the wedding bands should complement the engagement ring, they can both be happy.
It's a bad thing because then she knows what he spent on her ring, and if he's on a tight budget, she may be disappointed with the limit of her choices after seeing that one spectacular ring that cost too much.

They don't always. I chose the ring I wanted. When they do choose the ring it is either because it is a family heirloom OR because they want the girl to be surprised by the proposal and at the same time take it seriously. IF the guy knows she wants to choose the ring they can look at them ahead of time OR he can have a few picked out then ask her to run errands with him with the story that he has to stop by a jewlery store and pick up a ring his mom was having repaired then when they get there ask to see engagement rings and pop the question.

Because it's something they have to earn the money to pay for and it's up to them to find the ring that expresses their feelings for the woman...if she wants a bigger or more expensive ring than he can afford at the time, then she's not in love with him, but only after what he can give her (DREAM ON HOOKER). If the finances are tight starting out and the relationship lasts because the Lady is not an opportunist...the man will add to the set or opt to upgrade the set when finances permit it to show his progressive and continuing love and respect for the woman he married. However...he might show his love in other ways (like a nice home, vehicle, vacations, financial stability, faithfulness...and so on) and not upgrade the ring at all...only add anniversary bands to the already existing set. If she feels the need to ask or imply that she wants a bigger or better ring...he should not marry her at all because she is not worthy of his hard work and affections.

Well, I picked my ring, but I was extremely careful to choose something that I knew was reasonable - considering our financial situation. I also picked a ring that we didn't have to go in debt for and I totally love it. Every few years he asks if I want something a little "snazzier". No, this ring is a toke of where we were in life when we got married, a reminder of how far we have come together and I wouldn't "trade up".
Way too many people have to have the mac-daddy right off the bat so they can show off to their friends and family. All the wrong reasons for picking out a ring.
He did the asking, WE paid for the ring, WE paid for the wedding, etc.

Tradition of the Token.
My first ring was a cigar band and proposed in a convenience store, later replaced with a Halloween plastic spider ring, (before actual ceremony) after 30 years, the gift gets better.....Joan Rivers would be Proud.

If they proposed to you w/out the ring, would that be more fun? It's a bribe! The ring was invented so that women would feel flattered. Would you rather choose the ring w/ your future husband and squish the surprise?

Actually..........my wife and I were married using plain bands, just to have symbols.
When I could afford it, I took her shopping for her lifetime wedding ring. I asked her to pick out the ring she wished she had been married with, and I went back later and bought it. I surprised her with it a month later!
When we can afford it, I'll get mine.

If they are the ones that are doing the proposing and presenting, they should have the option of picking it out and having it ready before they do.
