It's a way to ask for the father's blessing. And it's more traditional too. It's like asking the father that you would like to be a part of his family rather than taking his daughter away from his family.

It sorta shows that you respect the bride and the brides father's opinion. It really scores points to help the dad accept the idea your going to take his daughter from his life ultimately

Hi Lana. I am sure other people will answer and tell you it is from the old days when we women were thought of as property, but....that gives me a chance to say a positive word to you. If and when you ever get married: never let yourself be any man's property in any way. Believe in yourself. You are a smart young woman and you should always respect yourself and be proud.

They don't so much do that anymore. It is a way of showing respect to the father/parents and in a way it kind of lessens the blow of "Hey... you know that little girl you've been raising since the day she was born? Yeah...well she's mine now so get over it."

Old Time Religion.
Respect and honor for her Family, but I don't think that goes on too much anymore in the US, nobody has too much of a dowry anymore and if they do, you can be darn sure it has been placed in a prenuptial agreement.
