I had a zookeeping internship over the summer. A biology degree is looked highly upon, but not necessary. The degreed/non-degreed ratio of zookeepers was probably 1:1. (Older zookeepers tended not to have degrees, newer ones did) A degree helped in moving zookeepers up into management positions. Zoology, ecology, physiology, and animal behavior classes would be helpful. Also - experience was key at this zoo, so volunteering, interning, or externing will help your chances of finding a job. You will need rabies shots to work with certain animals, especially bats.
