It's no different than the Swedish flying their flags to remember their heritage, or the Norwegians, or the Germans, or any other ethnic group. I am from the south and the flag simply means that I am of southern heritage....

Dear...you must have been asleep during history or else you were reading the liberal version. Why don't you do some in-depth research on the Civil War. Then, you won't appear so stupid when you answer questions about the south.
BTW, New Orleans is such a small part of the south. I hear some sarcasm and some snobbery in your answer. Again, you are obviously uninformed....
Waffle House...I'm sorry, I only eat in upscale restaurants....sounds like you don't.

Theirs nothing wrong with flying a confederate flag, its part of the culture of the south. The south as being a part of America...the Mexican flag isn't part of the USA culture and never will be. For another country to come into the USA and hang one of their flags is a disgrace to the USA and is a kick in the face to the American solders who fight for this country..When all of these men and women finally get to come home and they see the Mexican flag flying high on American soil they are going to think they are in Mexico...that should be a crime..

There is a great deal of difference beteen the mehhican flag and the " Confederate " flag. What Confederate flag did you mean?
Is it the Stars and Bars or the battle flag ?
I had no idea people were still showing alliegance to a sovereign state that no longer exists - and ended a hundred plus years before they were born.
Remember this was a treasonous rebellion where the question of where sovereignty was put to rest - after much turmoil.
I had relatives who fought in the 46th Mississippi in Company H. I stood in the rifle pits gazinng out at the kudzu covered
vista once a no mans land under the guns and artilliry of Union troops at Vicksburg so I have feel for Southern heritage.
But my folks came out of Georgia and Missisippi to Texas
in 1867,
We had folks in the Klan in the decades that followed who were good Christians, Democrats and ex Confederates but I would hope most people have evolved past this identity and towards something more representative of a nation and not the residual
hold outs of the symbols of a thankfully bygone era.
That South is gone, even if " good times there are not forgotten"
but I could no more wave a Confederate battle flag than I could
a North Vietnamese banner.
I honor anyone who served on either side of that conflict, I just don't identify with them.
Mehhicans still have an alliegance to an existing sovereign nation-state.
The Confederacy " died of a theory" to quote Jefferson Davis.
Look away, Dixie land.
That said, I am fascinated by certain gunboats in the Union Navy built for that conflict and am finishing a 1/8th scale model all scratch built - of Unidilla Class gunboat.
Yes, love your heritage, but keep it in perspective.
I remember talking to a couple of English tourists when visiting a foreign land.. who mentioned there are still people who support the House of York over Lancaster in the War of the Roses...and factions that still prefered the Cavaliers to the Roundheads during the 1640.. and others who referred to people they did not like as just a bunch of " Normans " .
Anyone here speak pure Saxon?

I know one thing. Jan K is a complete moron. Waffle house? Come on! There is plenty of the south left. New orleans only made a very small percentage of it. The south is well and alive. As for the flag standing for hate then I guess he thinks that about the American flag as well which flew over legalized slavery for 90 something years, and it flew over all the ships that brought the slaves to america as well. People make me mad when they talk out thier buttox. Stereotypes will continue for southern people and its heritage simply because of ignorant fools like Jan K.

Well, it happens to be a symbol of hate. A symbol of enslavement of another race. A symbol or murder and death.
Of course, you should have the right to fly the flag! This is America. But, someone else should have the right to fly a flag of planes flying into the world trade center. They are both symbols of hate and murder to different people. So... let's just be fair!
PS: If you really want a flag that has something to do with Southern Heritage get a big one that says WAFFLE HOUSE. After New Orleans died there isn't much south left, dear.

My only problem with flying other flags, is that I've seen some people flying them above the U.S. flag. I have issues with that. You're in america, not Mexico or Spain or wherever. Our flag flies highest. If you can't accept that, then don't fly a flag period.
And to jdmc: You're a fvcking moron.

At least the Rebel flag was always flown by Americans. That's the difference.

Your "heritage" was based on the bondage, subjugation, and enslavement of afrikans, i.e. human beings that were darker than you, and thus "less than human." That's an objectionable "heritage" at best. Would you object to people flying Nazi flags? with the SS bolts and the swastika?
