I wonder if religion will push our species into extinction. What are your thoughts regarding the outcome religion might have on homosapiens?

WE homosapiens ARE OUR OWN WORST enemy

I think in a sense all belief is religion. It's just that some are better than others. It's just a matter of definition though... we could easily define religions to to be only the ones that are unbelievable. Alternately, we could say that religions are comprised of both belief and of ritual. (...and by ritual we do not include scientific experiment!!!) Regardless, I think science always expects to be incorrect, but to always strive to improve. That places science on similar grounds with other incorrect beliefs. (but at least it makes an effort) Science is the religion that we can understand things by cumulative observing and reasoning. What we think of as religion is simply a failed scientific theory. The pair is somewhat entangled.

If homosapiens survives, I think the religions will be deemphasized. I think the population won't survive a century intact or even largely intact, but because of summation of all possible catastrophes, known and unknown. Antipathy fueled by religious ideals is quite significantly dangerous.

It's most likely gonna be science and/or evolution that will make homo sapience disappear. How violent this will be, and who will be pulling the "strings" is hard to tell. But a undetected gigantic meteorite can also hit earth any moment and wipe out all life on earth. And how could the science help in human extinction? An atomic or biological war. The easy spread of hazardous natural viruses because of overpopulation and our urge to travel. Extreme climatic changes caused by humans.
Most conflicts that seem to be fought over religion, are in fact not religious at all, but over resources, and religion is often used as scapegoat to fight the war, because it's a great means to get a lot of people behind the war.
In evolutionary sense, science will make a new kins of Homo. Maybe even something like the Homo Robotica or something like that. People that will not let themselves change, or don't have the means to have it done, will first be enslaved and maybe even become extinct, but they might evolve into their own species all over the world to survive the changing environments. The superious species will always call him/herself human. There also could be future alien interference by creatures that are dominant over us (which is very likely if they are capable of visiting earth). Maybe they just enjoy studying us but it's not unlikely they will enslave us or just wipe us out completely, just like we enslave and crush our "lesser" creatures on earth. Who knows whats gonna happen?

There are a variety of reasons why Humans will not survive long enough to get their eggs into more than one basket. Over the centuries, your planet was a curious place to visit once or twice and was not considered very interesting . Sure, your wars showed us how undeveloped you are as a species and your infantile,(in cosmic terms) dependence on god concepts does not bode well for you. We are now showing an interest in you because it is not often that we get to observe a species commit suicide. You are so close to maturing as a sentient species and it will be a shame to see you kill yourselves. There are just not enough of you becoming rational enough to force the issue. You let the least among you determine your fate, so be it.

Actually religion has helped humanity immensely during our early development. But, the further we progress the less relevant old style religion becomes until it is at the point now where it is curtailing our devlopment.

We have to find new ways to express our feelings about God, the Universe, Meaning of Life and the Afterlife (There is one, but I'm not sure it's in any form we can recognize!)

I doubt it will succeed in making us extinct, although I must say it's trying pretty hard. Personally I think that within another few hundred years at most, all religions will be gone, unless we manage to set our technology back far enough. Once people start making themselves more intelligent through cybernetic enhancements, more of them will realize that atheism is more logical than religion and convert to it.

I'm far more concerned with the "fact" that as human beings we keep taking from the earth and do not give back. We are moving our entire species, along with many others, towards extinction.

C'mon, give the naked apes a little credit, huh? We're a little smarter every year (just a little) and I'm sure we'll survive religion. Nuclear holocaust, no. Religion, no doubt.
