Downtown Halifax is a great spot to be. There are so many little shops and great outdoor cafes. Just head downhill towards the harbour, and you're bound to run into at least one place that you love. If you're a drinker, you'll definately want to tour the Keith's Brewery. Just because. You gotta hit up The Freak Lunchbox on Barrington at least once while you're here. Just picture a relatively small store, chockerblock full with candy. It's pretty cool. Pizza Corner in dwntwn hfx is great. The Citadel's kinda interesting too.
But my best bet would be to just walk downhill. You'll enjoy it. Or, if you're there in the summer, take a ride on the Harbour Hopper. It'll take you pretty much all over Halifax, by both land and water. Pretty cool. Don't forget to wave! But just go, enjoy yourself.

Great places to visit:
The Harbourfront and Historic Properties. Taking the passenger ferry from or to Dartmouth is fun in the summertime as well. http://www.historicproperties.ca/
The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (great exhibits, lots of Titanic displays) http://museum.gov.ns.ca/mma/index.html
Citadel Hill (Halifax's most prominent feature) http://www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/ns/halifax/visit/index_e.asp
Point Pleasant Park (large, beautiful park along the coast with historic stone forts/towers) http://www.pointpleasantpark.ca/default.asp
The Dingle Tower (built by Sir Sanford Fleming - inventor of the time zones) http://www.pbase.com/thomaxx/dingle
All the shops in the downtown area (Halifax also has great pubs/bars at night)
In July, the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo is the best event to see http://www.nstattoo.ca/site/index.php
Just outside Halifax:
Sambro lighthouse - oldest working lighthouse in North America http://www.nslps.com/lights/lighthouse_page_01.asp?ID=355
