Try one of these U. S. classics... Not all of them belong to pure realism, but they are realistic:

Twain: Huckleberry Finn - very funny and describes a bit society

Crane: The Red Badge of Courage - civil war novel

Jack London: The Call of the Wild - a golddiger's story told from the point of view of a dog

Dreiser: Sister Carrie - a low class girl's social struggle

Willa Cather: My Antonia - the life of the early pioneers

These are about 150-250 pages... I don't remember exactly.

Gullivers Travels by Jonathen Swift
or

What grade are you in? That can definitely make a difference in suggestions.

A few choices that I read in high school are "Cannery Row" by John Steinbeck, "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, "Farewell to Manzanar" by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston & James D Houston, and "The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger (a favorite of mine!)

Good luck on your report!
