The main reason is that the mother could go into labor = airlines do not want the responsibility = seat belt could be a danger factor to both mom and baby = safety of mom and baby is first and foremost = I know I wouldn't want to have flown at 28 weeks - just too uncomfortable all the way around! :)

A woman in labor on the flight...Not something the airlines wants to take an emergency landing, delay or a scare for. A flight attendant is not trained n delivering babies.
You might ask, well they could just land....
not if they are traveling over water they cant.

The airline does not want to be responsible if the mother goes into labor or has other complications during the flight where she nor the baby would be able to receive immediate medical attention.
