Why do people feel the need to give up their independant thoughts and beliefs to whichever religion they happen to have been born into or worse brainwashed by? Can't people be happy without giving themselves up to long dead, invisible, unresponsive ghosts? Seriously I was raised christian and am so much happier since I decided (with my own mind) to scrap the whole thing.

Seriously, I should believe because is I'm wrong in not believing I'll go to hell. I don't believe in hell!

Some people have the courage to strike out on their own but most do not. Fear is what keeps the masses locked into their belief system's clutches.

Well, let me put it to you this way:
You may feel very content in your decision to renounce Him, and you also seem very smug about rejecting the truth to embrace a lie. In fact, it seems you're quite proud of that.
Yet, if you're so sure about what you're saying...why even bother to come to the Religion & Spirituality board to challenge other believers? If you truly have "scrapped everything", why are you wasting your time here?
I think you and I both know the answer to that, whether you're willing to admit it or not. You may have hardened your heart for now, but there's something on the inside bothering you about this, otherwise you wouldn't even be here asking the questions.
But when everything is said and done (and a simple visit to the cemetary should prove to you that one day your time in this world will be over), Christians can afford to be wrong.....you can't be.
Either Jesus is a liar, or you are. I'll stick with Him, maybe someday you will too.

One reason is, as C.S. Lewis, said:
"Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important."
So, while I do believe in God, I think that you make at least two very valid points. 1. People who only half-way, kinda of sort, believe, and don't believe, claim to be Christians, but aren't, etc, do themselves nor God any favor.
2. Each person has the right to choose what he/she believes or does not believe.. Thus, you have the right to choose to not believe; others have the right to choose to believe. You don't want religion imposed on you. We don't want atheism imposed on us.
As the great american Rodney King said,
"Can't we all just get along."
Thanks for asking.

you have a right to believe the way you want to although I may disagree with you. Each culture and society has their religious belief system which helps hold the culture and society together even though differences do occur. each person in a particular religious belief system will have individual thoughts regarding same as no two people ( or more ) will ever agree totally on everything because of the free will each of us have.

Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people.

Good for you, I'm glad your happy. Other folks need to believe that there is something more than themselves to all this and follow what makes them feel comfortable, wouldn't it be nice if everyone could just leave everyone else to what makes them comfortable instead of asking "Why do you do that stupid thing?"
