Yoko,
Well, a Christian would say that there are wars going on. Not just in the Middle East, but with principalities and powers, evil in high places. With that war we are set against by those evil forces in many ways. Some in the ways of other religions.

And then there is the Muslim issue. They have something built in to their religion that many others don't have.
1) Prophecy of their progenitor Ishmael, the father of the Arabs and son of Abraham, in the pages of the counterpart of their holy book: The Koran.

2) They have disputed holy lands, each thinking that it belongs to them.

3) Muslims are willing to back up their claims in anger and violence. The leaders of the Islamic people tend to incite their people to think against Israel, the USA, and Great Britain in particuar.

4) They are given the power to do so by none other than God. Because there is also prophetic claim that all the nations of Israel's enemies will one day be gathered against her, and that the Lord will destroy them there as He returns to Earth. (Ezekiel 38&39, Zechariah 14)

So in this case, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are tied together, the conflicts that arise are built into them.

But here is a bit of wisdom: The nature of Religion is to eliminate the other Religions.

It is an issue because people make it an issue. Religion should be a personal thing and not carried as a badge or bone of contention. I am not Christian but a Buddhist (white, American) but only a few of my friends even know this. I am not ashamed of my faith but I believe it is for me to believe as I wish and not act stupid as shaving my head and chanting prayers at airports. However many Jews, Catholics, Mormons and Muslims flaunt their faith. Surely it would seem that dress could be modified to find more acceptance rather than push religion in others' face. I can't understand the need for people to be so foolish as to make themselves targets of hatred or bigotry by doing so. I have seen license plates or stickers on cars proclaiming the church.

I believe it is because the beliefs and faith of an individual is the very core of them. To have conflicting opinions is to have a conflict with the very heart of this person.

While religion is often problematic, so is politics for very much the same reason. You can argue whether you are a Ford man or a Chevy man and get over it, but to argue whether you are Catholic or Baptist, or Democrat or Republic is to go to the very core of that persons existence.

Because religion teaches us 2 B good N love each other w(that's each other within our own religion ) N everyone else outside it are bad, bad, bad people (our enemy) of course there's always those that take this to new heights N actually try to destroy their so called enemy that or nagged them about how wrong they r N how they should change now while they have the chance. Why can't they all just get along???... Is the same world if it goes we all go with it :l

Because religion preaches hate and encourages ignorance. Hate plus ignorance = problems.

Hitler was a Christian who led a Christian nation straight to the Holocaust.

Jews and Muslims, well, just look at Lebanon

Hindus and Muslims - South Asia

Muslims and Buddhists - southern Thailand

Religion has always promoted war and suffering

Religion a problematic issue?? That's all you can think of? Honey, the least of people's worries should be religion...

To better answer your question... Religion is something that people think can fall back on when "all else fails". Well.... When all else fails, and your "God" isn't helping you.. Where do you go? They all come to Y! answers.. Isn't that sad. Oh well... I just like rattling cages and stiring the pot... I think it's entertaining.

Hello Yoko. I bow to salute the Buddha nature in you. And thank you for this good question. I believe the human personality is deeply attached to a few core desires. The desire for certainty is manifest in religious choices. We cling to what we think makes us feel safe. If anyone challenges that lifeline, we become afraid. Panic sets in and we lash out to protect ourselves. Therefore, religion becomes one of the great points of friction between communities. It is like seeing a giant rope with millions of people hanging on, swinging into people on another rope. Everyone is afraid. The rope is an illusion, of course, just as the fear is. Our endless search for absolute certainty is the greatest illusion of all. Thank you so much for reading this humble answer. I wish you well in your studies.

1) Because some people can't stand for others to have an opinion differing from their own.

2) Because those same people somehow can't wrap their minds around there not being a religion that is 'right' for everyone.

Its the main sourse to hate another human being. Nothing else. The ediots who follow the stupid religous beliefs , hate the other belivers. So both type of ediots try to show the others that they were right. This keeps happing for the last hundred years. The Pope and the Mecka ( KSA ) put feul to the fire.

In my opinion, for the average person, the religion is a very important thing in his life, may be the most important at all, like the case for me.
The problem occurs when someone attacks another's religion by improper word, putting lies about it, here arises the source of all problems.
Another reason for such problems is the misunderstanding of a religion so that one feels like to express their hatred to that religion, like what happens a lot with Islam.
