Unfortunately you are absolutely right and Rick Warren is just running a business and not proclaiming the gospel.
I tried reading through it once through my church, but it was one of the hardest things to get through because of it's pandering.
Rick Warren has incorporated quite a bit of new-age stuff in his messages and his latest promotion, the "P.E.A.C.E" plan is even further removed from the gospel.
Check out some info on Rick Warren here: http://www.apologeticsindex.org/214-why-rick-warren-has-critics
And this is a link to his "P.E.A.C.E." plan. http://www.abrahamic-faith.com/James/Rick-global-peace-plan.html

My house group is studying it and to be honest although it makes some good points, I find it too formulaic. I prefer more realistic authors like Philip Yancey or Sheila Walsh. I find formulaic Christian books difficult and I like ones that speak straight to the heart address issues as they really are. I try to keep my life with God as honest as possible and I can't seem how formulas can apply to a relationship. I know everyone is different, but the book doesn't work for me.

The 40 days part is instrumental. For people who are truely seking God's direction in their lives, daily meditation, prayer, & fasting are imperative. Jesus did it.
The "formula" is Biblical. The scriptures are chosen to direct thoughts towards each particular discovery of God's plans for each individual. The prayer examples are given to aid in discussion - some peole simply don't know how to talk to God.
As far as the elementary writing style, one must take into account that those seeking God's plans for their lives are usually those new to the faith. Baby Christians must be fed on milk (basics) before they can digest meat (more substantial instruction).
Following the study also helps develope the neccesary daily quiet time that most of us don't get enough of.

Two somewhat different outlooks.. one suggests that people should look within, at their own desires and dreams, but the author says the starting place must be with God and his eternal purposes for each life. Real meaning and significance comes from understanding and fulfilling God’s purposes for putting us on earth.

I love it. It helped me change my life. It does look at bits and pieces of the Bible, but it doesn't change the Word of the Lord.

While I appreciate the author's motivation for the book, it is too simplistic for me.

If it doesn't line up with the word of God, then it is worthless.
