Motels (the word is a contraction of MOtor-hoTEL) caters to motorists and are strictly for sleeping. They have facilities to park your car close to the room and therefore most motels have few stories. There are no dining facilities, except for maybe a breakfast room. Motels are mostly situated at the outskirts of cities and villages and along important roads.
One important thing that makes hotels different is that they have a dining room. They may have a garage, but parking is mostly limited and the buildings can be quite high. Hotels are found mostly in inner cities.

There really is none. The term "motel" is derived from the term "motor hotel," which originally meant that the hotel provided parking (ca. 1950s). The term motel today generally is used for a "limited service" property (i.e., a hotel that provides a limited number of amenities and does not provide food service).
