I had a border collie and she was the best dog i ever had, a solid voice command always worked for her. One day she was chasing an animal in the yard and i called her and she stopped and turned around and came back.. she was a good listener.. but you have to use your voice, that is what they will respond to, hitting a dog in any form of fashion just makes them resent you.. use your voice..

by the way, i wish i could find a border collie.. if you know where i can get one, my dog has passed but she was a great dog.. email me at scoutingbitch@yahoo.com

good luck

Border collies are extremely active dogs. These are dogs who absolutely have to have a lot of activity - both physical and mental or you will end up with a very unhappy and probably destructive dog.

You don't say how old your dog is but my guess is she doesn't get nearly enough exercise for her breed. Walk her more, play ball or frisbee, get her involved in fly ball, obedience or agility. You'll have a much better behaved dog, I'm sure.

If she is still a puppy, I'd only do obedience at home with her, don't take her to classes yet. Classes are much too stressful for puppies.

A border collie is a working breed of dog. They need lots of exercise, not just 15 minutes twice a week playing ball with you. They need something to do every day. She is bored and wanting to work. When a dog like this doesn't have anything to do they can get destructive, destroying a house, yrad, etc.

Border Collies are actually herding dogs, so they are hyper. When you play with her and you are starting to get tired, just start saying something like "This is the last one" or "One more time" and hold up your finger to give a visual when saying this. After a while she will understand and this should take care of the problem. Or you might even try to train her to bring the ball back to you while you are sitting down.

we have a border collie too! Learn NO! say it strong, loud and take the ball away completely. If your dog enjoys water & the spray doesn't work put some mint oil in it or citronella - boy they hate that! soon when the water gun comes out he will associate that with unpleasant smell & should back off. They need a lot of exercise, have you tried walking them for an hour or so / roller blading them? Does tire them out eventually. Good Luck

The first two people both have great ideas. Dogs hate spray bottles and newspapers. Just get a spray bottle filled with water. Squirt it at her when she jumps on someone. Most dogs are afraid of a rolled up newspaper. Just it the paper on you hand or leg. That usually scares a dog away. If you have to gently touch the dog with the newspaper it won't hurt her.

You don't say how old your dog is. If its a wee puppy then I suggest that it is yourself that needs training along with your dog - the best solution would be puppy training classes which would would tire your dog out as well as being good exercise for yourself. It would also help socialise your dog and you could pick up more hints from other dog owners.

I personaly dont belive in newspapers when you have to teach a dog the meaning "no". But with my dog I always would use a small spray bottle and not one with a strong spray, you can buy them at pet stores like petsmart or petco.
