Some years ago I was in a situation so dangerous, and for such a long time, that I do remember sleeping with my eyes open. I was a single female being hunted by soldiers in the jungle. To survive and escape I had to only cat nap, never really fall asleep but my body was totally exhausted.
An unstoppable force hitting an immovable object with me in the middle.

Sometimes I'd open my eyes while I was in the coma. Some people who were visiting would think, "he's awake!" but I was only opening my eyes. My brain wasn't trying to "see" anything. My lying there with my eyes open was kind of creepy to some people. I think the doctors finally closed them, or put drops in my eyes because they would get too dry.

i do not study about people... yet I have a cat who replaced into born with out orbs, or perhaps as he sleeps his eyes are closed. So... i am going to assert, No. i assume it has to do with facial relax (muscular tissues loosen up even as asleep) being correlated to sleep.
