I too have very thick curly hair, except my hair is a little longer. Normally what I do is in the summer when it's hot and humid I use Matrix products (they have a line for curly hair) to keep from having that afro look. It tames and shapes my curls to look like I just came out of the salon. All I do is wash my hair in the morning and apply matrix curl cream, I scrunch, then finish with a little flexible hairspray. That's it!!
In the winter, though, I like to straighten my hair. Matrix also has a Sleek Look line, but you'll need a good flat iron for that. You can find Matrix products anywhere: salons, Meijer, maybe Walmart, Target....I hope this helps.

Try corn - rolling the front and leaving the back curly (it'll look hot)
OR
* Leave it half up half down
* Use a 'zig-zag- head band (the plastic wire ones)
If that didn't help much, check out these websites, it has 100's of diff photos on ways you can stylr your hair.

can you try straightening your hair?
If yor hair is long enough to braid, i would say definetly try braids. Make them look good! ribbons, pretty hair ties, anything else you can come up with.
Go to a stores hair department, i love to look at all the cool stuff they have and i end up buying a few things for a few bucks! (Wal*Mart)

You can tie it up or clip it like a bun. Afterall, the hair is yours. You gotta have some confidence. Just let it be natural~
