Why is it that Correctional officers are at the bottom of the list As American heroes compared to Cops ?
I have been one for 9 years now. Any of you Cops want to take off your Gun and face... stand up to... and take down all of them grouped into one??? Did you know that we get killed just like you do? All the trash you take off the street we have to face everyday and keep them from getting out into the city streets. It really sucks when we see Cops give nothing as credit to the Correctional officer .Have a nice day

OH YOU BUNCH OF #*&@%$&$*%@&!!!!!!!!!
ME and my wife have worked in the state prison system for a combined total of 25 years. When you started the job back then you was picked for the training to become a Corrections Officer. The training is also certified under the state law enforcement code(s). I've seen guys that look like football players walk in and hear that gate slam behind them and start crying to get out " I can't take this!" and we only went 10 feet inside the walls.
Now the guy's a city cop!!!!!!
We had a woman nearly get her head cut off with a tuna can lid and raped several times before and after death.
I could go on, but this is not the place. And the cops out there wouldn't understand anyway unless they actually worked in the system. We do have several guys who were cops on the street and still are cops on the street, they have actually seen both sides, so unless you have been there don't put us down for the job we have to do!!!!!!!
Not everyone can do what we do, THEY CAN'T HANDLE THE PRESSURES OF BEING INSIDE WITH RAPISTS, MURDERERS AND CHILD MOLESTORS!!!!!!!!!!!
Think twice before you say a cop or firefighter is better than a corrections officer.
Oh, and take off your hat to any correctional officer who works in the private prisons. They do as we do without the benefits of special training or they have to pay for that training!!!!!!!!

Probably because most people don't know what Correctional Officers face on a day to day basis.

It could be a very interesting story "reality" show to follow a few correctional officers on a daily basis, and see what their life is really like.

I'd agree, on a day to day basis, correctional officers in a large Maximum security prison may face a more dangerous life than many police officers.

There is also this simple fact though, in the Army, it's the men on the front line that are heroes. In the Air Force it's the men in the fighters and bombers that are the heroes. It's almost always the person on the front line, not the people who do the day to day grunt work, who are seen as the heroes.

And from my standpoint.. Thank you for everything you do, your job is very important, and not a job I'd want.

Cops get the recognition because they're more than just people serving the community just like corrections officers. They get the credit because they are often in the spotlight - they get seen by the public. Think about it - Steve Jobs gets the credit for being the boss of Apple and the link to the ipod success but the engineers and design artists don't get anything other than a fancy paycheck. I don't know what you get paid but i do know that public service is not a job for the faint of heart whether it be serving in the army, being a corrections officer, being a teacher or a nurse, public servants don't get paid much, get treated the worst and have the most demanded from them. I would like to use this opportunity to thank you and all the other public servants for doing a job that makes a difference not in terms of cash flow but in terms of actually making the world a better place. I'm sure there are many people in this world who, if they were to stop for a moment and think, would truly appreciate the work you put in to do such a menial job but one that makes such a difference

I get what you're saying cause I used to work for a private prison, and that other gent is correct, no special training, it think i made some 7.00 an hour, man it was crazy, so I know what it is like to be in there with the human trash, it's creepy, it makes you angry, and then you have to bottle it in so that they don't see a reaction from you cause those guys are just looking for your weaknesses....My respects to you and your fellow brothers who work the correctional side of law enforcement (including my biological brother)....and if it comes as any consolation.....some forums here are people complaining about cops, not upholding us, and I've never seen a down with C/O's rant as of yet.....have a safe shift.....

Yeah. Cool story bro. Except for the fact that your butchering of the English language should be an additional felony. So, just to be clear...if I manage to act like such a douche that I get myself locked up for being unable to interact with the rest of the world in any logical manner, and then I continue to act like a complete degenerate, and at some point a corrections official makes a comment that I don't like, then HE should somehow be the one to learn a lesson. Uh huh, cool story bro.

I respect your job. For some reason I find prisons a very interesting place. I can't imagine what your life is like spending every day with criminals. I am sure it is a dangerous job. I know this sounds silly, but I watch shows like Oz because I like to see things that happen in prison. I am sure it is mostly fictional. I am a nurse and have thought one day I could find a job in a correctional facility, but I think I would chicken out and be too intimidated to work at a place like that. I think you guys put yourself in danger everyday and I respect that. It must be an interesting profession.

Don't worry. The general public think as badly as police officers as they do of correctional officers. Either way, not too bright thugs who didn't want an honest job but instead wanted a power trip.
