A gown, one piece, simple design, 1 shade of colour, avoid bright colours, go for those with a silky sheen. Pearl, champagne, cream coloured are also fine.
Have a sash around the waist and/or a shawl that is of your favourite colour, avoid matching colours.
Heels are recommended.
If you have nice toes, flaunt them.
Earrings are a must, wear pearl or studs, or those that dangle, do not wear ear rings.
A simple necklace would be fine, avoid gold and pearls. Unless you want to look older than you are or really mature.
A choker-style necklace is fine, but do not attempt to look punk or gothic.
Lastly, a nice leather handbag that is small.
Don't forget your smile.

Full length ball gown with appropriate shoes and other accessories. The ballgown can be hired but still costs a lot - I hate the idea of paying £50 to wear a dress for one night. Don't wear an ordinary coat or jacket over a beautiful ballgown. You can buy a wrap or stole from Debenhams or Tie Rack for quite a reasonable price and it will be something you can keep and use. Also Debenhams do have some gorgeous ballgowns and evening gowns in the Debut range among others, so on reflection I don't think it is worth hiring. Some of the "frocks" I have seen in hire shops have been very "Dallas" or "Pat Wicks from Eastenders" so go with Debenhams instead.

Black tie means formal, and tasteful, period. Women don't have to wear black, but they ought to wear a full-length formal gown. It should be elegant rather than flashy or sexy.
You may want to inquire with someone who's attended the event before to see if there are any unspoken rules regarding styles and colors - maybe most of the women opt for black even if they don't have to, or perhaps most don't opt for full-length gowns. You can only find that out from someone experienced with this particular event.

Black Tie refers to formal dress. It used to be 'bow tie'. The girl should wear a formal gown which is both decorous and decent.

A dress or skirt and top, must be smart, skirt must be knee length or below (but doesn't have to be floor length). However, if it's a ball, people will probably wear full length ball dresses. In terms of accessories, unless you are getting married or you're royalty DON'T wear a tiara! Most importantly, wear something you don't have to fiddle with all night, it will ruin the experience if you are uncomfortable or constantly adjusting...Have Fun!!!

ohh, ever learn, it's a charity ball for heavens sake, not a get together at the playboy mansion. a long black tie that you actually have to knot, now that's appropiate. okay okay okay, a classical black dress, single pearls or a simple gold chain, black satin shoes with either a black, white, or gold clutch bag. discretion will guide you.

I love silver heels especially with the right jewlery, but I think you should rock some sexy black open toes for this one, just because you don't want to over do it. If you could find some with a diamond rhinestones that would be the sparkle you need.Just because for this event you would want a nice sparkly necklace and earings(check out a local boutique)and you want some kick azz sexy shoes to compliment not compete with that dress and jewlrey. Now silver shoes and jeans thats cool!
