Should I peel mushrooms? I mean when they get a bit old - still edible, but a bit battered. I never have but then I'm a culinary slattern. The way I see it is they're going to be cooked so who's to know? What do you do?

And, no, I don't mean magic mushrooms you little tinkers.

If they are really squishy, don't use them at all but if it is just to go in a sauce, I wouldn't bother peeling them unless the skin underneath is decidedly better than the outside. They can add a real dirty, mouldy taste to dishes if they are too far gone though. Use your best judgement. The more tired I am, the less I care about such things!

I never peel mushrooms, you waste the best bit doing that! I always give them a good wash and drain well. They shrink when you cook them so imagine if you are taking the skin off there will be nowt left once they cook!

Just cut out the mushy bits, don't peel them. People peel them coz they think mushrooms are poisonous - but the type you buy in Tesco aren't!!

I never bothered to peel them. Just wash them in cold water and cook them up. Peeling does nothing except add another chore to cooking them.

if the mushroom are fresh then you should just dust them off and not peel them, (all the vitamins are in the skin!) but when i have older ones then i peel them, then they look a bit better.

As all the goodness is just under the skin, I wouldn't peel them. Just make sure that you use them whilst they are fresh though. That way you get all the best flavour.

Lifes too short for peeling mushrooms, although I used to do it. Wash them, scrape off any mud, thats all. Doesnt make any difference if theyre old or new, although chuck em out if too manky.

I was taught not to wash them so I normally peel them just to be safe rather than sorry.
