I find myself clenching my muscles at times throughout the day, even if I am not having anxious thoughts. For instance I will squeeze all the muscles in my whole lower leg and foot and hold them for moments and then continue to do it. sometimes i dont' realize i am doing it and it wiill be visible to other people. i also stop breathing at times (for only a few moments) and realize this and take a breath, or I clench my fists around things when i'm holding them.

It sounds like you could be suffering from anxiety and stress. Clentching your muscles, grinding your teeth, etc. are symptoms of stress & anxiety. Try doing deep breathing exercises. It might sound silly but it will help releive the tension in your body. Also, therapeutic massage can be a big help in getting all of the tension out of your body. If it continues to bother you, seek a Dr.s advise. There are meds that can help if it is severe.

Don't know about the clenching being part of anxiety, but somewhat involuntary muscle activity and anxiety may be due to dips in your blood sugar (which happen to normal people, too) daily.

There is some basic info on low blood sugar at www.hufa.org. Check out the symptoms page to see if you have more than just clenching and anxiety.

Yes clenching parts of your body can definately be caused from anxiety. My teeth were starting to hurt really bad and I couldn't figure out why. Then all of a sudden one day i was looking in the mirror at my teeth and it dawned on me that I had been clenching my teeth so hard that I was wearing my bite down on my teeth. I told my doctor about it and he adjusted my medication for anxiety but I still find myself doing this. I am nox on Xanax and it is getting a little bit better but I also have to remember to take a breath when I am talking because I too forget to until I start to run out of air and have to remember to breathe.

Yes the symptoms you describe are all signs of anxiety. Try relaxing. Is there any thing big going on in your life that could be causing you anxiety? If it keeps up or gets worse. You might think about seeing a therapist. First I would just try some relaxation tapes. Good luck.

Yes, especially teeth clenching. It can harm your teeth and your bite.
