oh, oh...been watching too many cartoons.
The finger thing. No. Something more dense like a pencil, no.
Something metal like a metal rod, or a crimp in the gun barrel is highly possible to cause an implosion which could kill the gun operator.
Don't try this at home...or anywhere.

Let us not forget that humans are meek and fragile creatures, the bullet, or any other hard object traveling at a high and powerful speed will ALWAYS win.....if you were to shove a 9mm steel shaft into the barrel of a gun and shoot it, it will surely backfire, because the bullet will then be unable to find it's path, but your finger that's so soft, come on, haven't you ever smashed your finger on a drawer, what do you think is going to happen when you fire a bullet straight at it?........

If you put your finger in front of the barrel and fire it will definitely alter the path of the bullet. The extent of that change will depend on the position of your finger, its resistance, the design of the bullet and the type material its made from. However, the change in direction is likely to be so minimal as to be undetectable to the naked eye.
Why not give it a try and see for yourself?

The Myth Busters on Discovery did this very experiment a few weeks ago. And depending on what one used to try and block the barrel of the gun to try and stop the bullet will determine the effect on the bullets trajectory. In some cases there was no effect, in other cases there was.

Well at least you started with 10 fingers. No a finger will not obstruct the barrel. Now if you jam a small bolt in the barrel with a hammer then you might blow the gun up.

Its much better to simply grab the slide hard enough to keep it pushed back, the attacker will help you by trying to force the gun forward in resistance. As long as the slide is back the gun wont fire.
For a revolver , providing the hammer is cocked back, it is a similiar tactic, grab so your thumb and forefinger are on either side of the barrel, and jam the fold of flesh between the said fingers in front of the hammer, effectively immobillizing the hammer.

It will change the direction, as it blows your finger off. If it is a 22 the bullet could also follow your bones into your body.
If you can get that close, merley grab the gun and turn the muzzle in another direction

Yeha i agree with Aussie Fallen Angel.
The dudes from MythBusters love finding out if stuff like that is really true.
The Sbs Website for Myth Busters is;
www20.sbs.com.au/mythbusters/
Or the discovery Channels Site for MB is;
dsc.discovery.com/fansites/mythbusters/mythbusters.html
I think they just like to blow stuff up.
Also i dont think u'd have that finger on your hand anymore, if you're gonna put it infront of a gun.
By all means try it out and let us know.
