When you're sitting in a bad position and one of your limbs "falls asleep" It's caused by poor circulation in that area. Then when you move it again, all the blood rushes back in and triggers all your nerves, causing them to all fire and cause that tingling feeling.

THE prickly sensation, medically known as paraesthesia, happens when you cut off the nerve impulses from your limbs to your brain, usually by sitting awkwardly. Initially there is numbness, but when you start to move and the messages circulate again the pins and needles feeling begins.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: Wiggling hands or feet can help, but don't stamp or bash them if they are completely numb - you could hurt yourself. Eating garlic or taking a herbal supplement of Ginkgo Biloba (Holland & Barrett, Ј4.49 for 30 tablets) can improve blood circulation. Pins and needles are also a common symptom of anxiety or panic, so relaxation techniques can help.

Scientifically, it's called parasthesia or cacaesthesia. The skin of the affected area might tingle, feel like it's being pricked from the inside (pins and needles), or may be numb. It's not dangerous, but can be caused by some dangerous conditions such as hyperventilation, panic attacks, poor circulation, etc. You can avoid pins and needles by keeping yourself in positions that do not restrict blood flow to parts of your body such as crossing your legs, laying on your arm, etc. You can quickly take the feeling away by rocking your head side to side. If your hands have fallen asleep, clencing and unclenching them may help. If your legs or feet have fallen asleep, walking around might help.

The peripheral nerves of the body send information back to the brain and spinal cord. When a sensory nerve is pressed by a cramped or awkward position, its functioning starts to falter. In time, the affected limb 'falls asleep', which means the sensory messages are blocked. Once pressure is taken off the nerve, functioning resumes. The uncomfortable prickling sensation is caused by the resumption of pain messages from nerves to the brain. Other nerves, such as those that provide information on temperature, take a little longer to recover.

The 64$ word is parasthesia for pins and needles. It is due to a lack of blood supply to an area, pressure on the nerve or damage to the nerve by swelling, pressure or bone.
