Once you will have trained enough, muscle memory and training will take over the moment you are put in a combative situation. One of the things that martial arts teach you is to recognize what is coming your way by using the telltales that are being broadcasted by your opponent, and really, you don't always need to make contact with a block or a parry to avoid an attack.
Get off the tracks. I have been studying European medieval and renaissance martial arts for almost 5 years now, and one of my training partners has this saying: the best parry is being where your opponent's blade isn't. So if you're not too confident with your blocking, step off the line of attack, then take control of the attacking limb before you counterattack. Footwork is often underestimated when it comes to fighting, but an integral part of it.
Granted, I don't carry my swords with me all the time, so if I get jumped, they won't be much use to me. However, the same principles do remain the same. I'm not going to just stand there and try to stop everything coming my way. I'm going out of his line of attack and then striking as hard as I can, as fast as I can, where it'll hurt him the most when he can't do anything about it.

well you have to be intelligent enough an artist, to be able to allow yourself the ability to manipulate the situation to fit you. Be it for changing a technique or creating a new one. IF your scared a your crosscut won't work don't use it... but your crosscut might work with maybe a down ward adjacent shot think about it, maybe kick the idea around a little try it a few times that execute it. Your martial arts may not work in ever situation thats why its good to crsoo train. A lot of my mind training and just over all physical trainign is great from kung-fu, but if i fough a muay thai fighter they would have more endurance had i not cross trained. So saying martial arts won't help i wrong its to say will my one martial art have context in teh battle which of course tehres a 95% chance of you martial art smarts not even takign effect. hope i helped and good luck.

Personally i don't think it helps.
In most proper fights it involves one person punching another person several times in the face Very Hard, you simply would not have the time to use blocks etc. The other person may be drunk in which case it probably wouldn't affect him much if you managed to punch him back.
Also alot of fights end up on the ground which alot of Arts don't teach.
When i was Kickboxing i was holding i think a blue belt (after about two years training) i entered an open tournament and fought a Kung Fu Black Belt.
I don't mean to brag but his training was pretty ineffective against a barrage of Kicks and Punches from me and i beat him Quite easily...
How can you be classed as a black belt if you can't prove that you can use it effectively..

some martial arts are impractical like some of the blocks in kung fu are unrealistic in my opinion but as far as hard kick and punches submissions and throws there is no reason why these shouldn't work in a fight, I'm sensing ur not a natural fighter that's why Ur nervous, that you'l get Ur head kicked in, but I'm sure the more u train the more confident you'l become. my advice if u ever get into a street fight, would be don't do anything fancy like a spinning back kick just do what comes naturally like right hook then take-down and then choke him out, well that's what come naturally to me

Todays martial arts stress form and discipline way too much. repetively making a block allows your oponent to see your capabilities. Instead of thinking and acting it is better to just react to what someone gives you. some repitition is good but it is better to let you body use its instinct. as far as which martial art is better...none are of any use if you robotically go through the movements...i suggest practicing multiple disciplines and adapting them to yourself. also it doesn't matter how much you know or how good you are, you will get hit from time to time...but then what...take a hit and fall...or take the hit and keep on fighting

it does help but it all depends on your nolage of martial art and combat. you must always remember that sparing is not fighting, sparing has rule fights do not. things like grabing legs and elbowing are not allowed in sparing, but in fighting anything that you can think of goes.
So my final answer to you is that it all depeneds to the existent you practice your style. For example tae kwan do is all kicks and no punching, if you practice with both punching and kicking it will help more. also putting ground fighting in sparing would be a great benefit to you because 80% of fights end on the ground.
also when practicing fighting try to learn when to use what, When in close range dont kick to the head(kicking is not good in fights if the person is inexperienced).
here are some of the most effective things to do dering a fight.
Close Range: punching, elbowing, grabing, kicks to the legs, neing, head buting, spiting, biteing, sweaping
Mid Range: punching, low kicks, high kicks (if confident opponent wont grab),grabing(harder to do in mid range)
Ground :submissions, joint locks, punching, head buting, neing, spiting
Joint locks(standing up):this falls under grabing, if done right you will be able to stop the fight or brake opponents joint(s)
Blocking: the block you learn in forms are almost usless in fighting, the ways to block wile fighting are learned during sparing

That's because your gym is a huge joke. You train only once a week which isn't even enough and your instructor seems to be a fraud since there's no such thing as 12th degree black belt in Tae Kwon do. Also you're learning it for wrong reason. You're learning it only so you can go around and run your mouth and hope every chicks will want you and all guys will envy and fear you.

The art's do work if you practice them every day. It called muscle memory you will react without thinking BUT only if you practice.
I have found in my travels that most people do go back to street fighting. I seen a guy take a round house to the jaw and just smile at the other guy with a bloody mouth.

Martial Arts helps you when you are in a fight. If you just started, then the blocks you are learning will not be effective, because it is not second nature to you yet. Martial Arts and MMA are 2 different things. MMA encompasses stand up (Boxing, kickboxing) with take downs and ground fighting (Judo, Jujitsu), mainly what is used in UFC. Martial Arts is different depending on what style it is. For instance,Aikido teaches you spirituality and defending yourself against mulptiple attackers. Japanese juijitsu teaches a basic variety of stand up and ground techniques. Judo (derived from japanese jujitsu) teaches you various throws, and ground techniques. All the dangerous techniques from japanese jujitsu are taken out in Judo. Brazillian Jujitsu (derived from Judo) focuses more on ground technique. Taekwondo (Korean) focuses mainly on kicks. MMA is mixed martial arts, it is derived from all types: judo, brazillain jujitsu, boxing, thai boxing, all that. If you want to learn how to fight to beat somebody's ***, you should learn MMA. If you want to learn Martial Arts to get your black belt, so you can teach that martial art, then learn martial arts.
Here is a link to the Martial art that I am learning (Fuji Ryu). It is a type of japanese jujitsu that incorporates ground techniques, katas, and weapons. Don't know why, but I love katas. I put other links on here as well (MMA, judo, jujitsu) Took out the http://www.
Hoover over 6. toget the whole website, that one is the most useful.

If the guy is punching at you and you can't stop his punching, you are supposed to bob, weave and go in for a take down. If he sprawls then you are going to have to fake him out to get the takedown. After the takedown it is ground techniques.
