How often do I need to wash chew toys? I am talking about the plush kind and the rope kind. I want to toss them in the washing machine, but I am afraid that my dog won't want to chew them any more. They were relatively in expensive...is it best to just replace them after awhile?

Does anyone else have a dog that is obsessed with chewing plastic cups like the kind you get at concerts or the mall?

I wash my dogs chew toys weekly and they seem to like them better clean. It's like a new toy for them and they are interested all over again. I have a dachshund who loves to play with the plastic tops off of the laundry detergent bottle. She takes them in her mouth and throws them up in the air. Of course I only allow her to play with the plastic cups while she is being supervised.

My dogs have clean chew toys about every 2 weeks. Only because my male has a wet mouth, and really leaves a slime (LOL). I also use the wash machine to "test" toys, I know if they are starting to fall apart in the wash- it's time for new.
Over the summer- I have picked up a "Supply" of new chew toys- tag sales often have stuffed animals for under a dollar- I just check to make sure they are sturdy enough to withstand a good chewing, no loose eyes- nose etc.....

My dog would chew anything she could get away with, any time. I would go ahead and wash the chew toys as often as you feel like it. Cleanliness should not have any effect on the dog.

I'd like to know why a dog's mouth is considered "cleaner" than a humans, and yet leaves everything they chew slimy?

Monthly. Don't worry, they WILL chew on them again. They think that they are getting new toys. Replace toys if they start loosing limbs, etc. {Unless you want to sew them up.}
