Hi - I'm Peggy - but not Margaret!
I looked this up in a Chambers' dictionary of names dated1903, and the diminutive Peggy seems to be a progression. Here's what it lists for 'Margaret' - amazing what this name can become:
Margie, Margery, Marjory, Madge, Mag, Maggie, Meg, Meggy, Peg, Peggy, Meta, Gritty.
(Gritty??? How many Gritty's do you know?)
And all of these mean 'a pearl'. That's me, of course.....
Good luck!
Peggy

The Margaret - Meg - Peg - Peggy route seems the most logical, but sometimes there is no logic when it comes to names. Often what happens is someone calls a child by a nickname or a pet name, and that name sticks and is copied by others.
But unlike the Margaret/Peggy combination, most of the nick names (for example, Bill for William and Dick for Richard) bear at least some resemblance to the original name.

It's a frienship or pet name that loved ones shorten.Margaret - Maggie - Peggy. My grandmother was called Margaret and all her friends and family called her Peggy. I often asked why and this was the answer i was given :)

Actually, I think that custom is found more in Ireland than anywhere else, shortening the name 'Margaret' to 'Peggy', although there are plenty of 'Maggies' as well. No idea how it came about though ...

Probably for the same reason that in olden days, young ladies named Mary were called Polly. A large number of given names were not often used, and the individual was known by their nickname. Examples: Eleanor (Nellie); Harriet (Hattie); Susan (Sukie or Sudie); Sarah (Sally); Elizabeth (Betty, Betsy); Margaret (Meg, Peg, Mag, Peggy, Midge, Marge); Marguerite (Daisy); Catherine (Kate, Kitty); Frances (Fanny); Martha (Patty, Patsy, Mattie); Matilda (Tilly, Mattie); Ann (Nancy); Theresa (Tessie). If you are researching ancestor's names, try looking up both given name and nickname, they could be entered in records as either one.

If you think of Maggie, you can see how that could become Peggy.
