I've poked and prodded and isolated the problem to his front left paw, second digit. I can't *see* anything wrong... if its broken (possible, he likes to jump the fence) can anything be done to help him? Or is it just like our toes... just have to tough it out?

of course I'm not going to leave him in pain... but its the weekend and the vet is closed... I tried taking him to a Japanese vet that advertised they spoke english... I couldn't get across to them what the problem was.

He is very active and bouncy still... its only when he is calm and walking that you can see the limp.

He could have a splinter in the foot. Have a vet look at it before it get's infected.

He should be seen by a vet - dogs need their feet and he could easily have something wrong that you don't see, but you surely aren't going to leave him in pain, are you?
