You should keep the name. It's not even the original name of Satan and it actually means "morning star".

We're not all Christians here and the fact that one group of people don't like a name should not stop you calling him it.

Plus, it is not a girl's name. Lucy is a girl's name but Lucifer is a boy's name.

Can some people get a life? There are names I don't like but I don't hate people who call their child those names.

Would you hate someone who called their baby "Ian" because it was Ian Huntley's first name? If we did that we would have a very short list of acceptable names.

Okay, this is a very long and boring answer. I apologise.
It's a lovely name, Latin for bringer of light, the original Roman name for the planet Venus, also known as the morning star.First mention of Lucifer is in the fourteenth chapter of Isaiah, Old Testament.

"How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!"

Know what? This has given the Christians a bit of a headache. How the hell did a Latin name find it's way into a Hebrew manuscript dating prior to the Roman language? What was Satan's Hebrew name? Well turns out in the original Hebrew text, this bit's not about a fallen angel, but a fallen Babylonian king, who had persecuted the Israeli children. There's no reference to Satan. Probably early Christian scribes, writing in Latin, decided they'd prefer the story to be about a fallen angel, a creature not mentioned in the original Hebrew text, and they called him "Lucifer." Makes a better read I suppose.
Why Lucifer? Venus, the morning star can be seen in the sky just before dawn and heralds the sunrise. The name derives from the Latin term lucem ferre, "bringer of light." In the Hebrew text the Babylonian king's name is Helal, son of Shahar, which means "Day star, son of the Dawn." The name may have reflected the gold and glitter of a proud king's dress and court. Interestingly, Jesus is also refered to as the morning star somewhere.

So anyway, it's origin hasn't much to do with Satan. Tell you mum.

EDIT: Wondering why I gave a serious answer.
Your questions get a lot of responses. Do you enjoy reading then?

Christian or not. The name has a significance. Though Lucifer meant full of light which seems quite nice. The historical figure has lost this glory and is now Gods adversary satan.

I believe if you love your mum and love your son you'd change it.
I also think you are just making a joke but please be considerate for your child that has to bare his name the rest of his life.

Call him Handsome if you want to be unique at least he'll have something to laugh about during hios school years and it's a great booster for his ego. If every one calls him Handsome.

A name is like a lebel. You put a can of food on the shelf, and you call it Deadly Poison, and it is not going to make people think that if they eat it it will be good for them. THis poor child has been labeled "Satan", and if you have a brain in your head, you will change it immediately. What kind of parent gives a sweet little baby a name that will mark him for life? When people name their children, they should think about the picture they want their child to have of himself or her self. Give the kid a chance at a decent life. I know that if I saw that name on a job application, I probably would not even call "Lucifer" in for an interview. It is a clear indication of the type of screwball family he has grown up with, and leads an employer to think that this person will not have enough brains to pound sand in a rat hole. What kind of mother are you, anyway?

I'm sorry for saying this... but what on earth possessed you to do that to an innocent child?! You have to know a name carries connotations as well as perceptions about the person. What's in a name is more than mere letters, it's almost a kind of public label. He is the person who will have to live with it. Maybe he'll grow up and want to enter a monastery! Rename your baby Fred or something. Give him a chance!

Anton LaVay (sp) the author of the satanic bible didn't name his kid Lucifer!

Maybe it's a pretty name, but have you ever thought that you may give your son probs with that name??
Imagine when he's going to school and the other kids dun wanna be friends with him cuz they are scare of the name?? What about when he's looking for a job and no company wanna take him??
Yeah, you can it's only a name, but think bout it again, for his future.
You should give him a name that WONT give any NEGATIVE effects on him.. as it is now (at least to your mom, and to MILLIONS Christians in the world).
I think you also wont like it when people look strange at your son, right?
Just think about it, and consider a new name for him.
Wish you all the best :)

There's nothing wrong with freedom of choice.

Personally I like the name Lucifer, I nearly called a puppy Lucifer, but didn't cos my mother didn't approve. I then regretted it.

P.S. You mother, if she's any kind of mum, should forgive you, it may take time and lots of effort. Good luck.

I agree with your viw that Lucifer is a good one!! But, even though I am a non christian, I know it will offend a lot of believers!! Think of the baby being ridiculed and isolated for the rest of his life just by a name. You may fight with the society and win out temporarily but the poor boy will have to bear the brunt for his life. Is it not better to opt for an acceptable alternative? Personally, I would like to stand behind you but I am only thinking about him and he should be given a decent life un affected with his name !!!

Lucifer (Latin: “Light-Bearer”) carried a torch and served as herald of the dawn. In Christian times, Lucifer came to be regarded as the name of Satan before his fall. Still, I do not think that many know the meaning to this word and will take it offensively. It is no name for someone to go through life with. It will be very hard for him and forget about him finding friends. Have it changed for his sake and you can do that easily by contacting the Social Security office in your area. Remember that life is sometimes hard enough so at least give him a name to be proud of.

He is after all, your son. While you may think its a beautiful name, you have condemned him to a lifetime of teasing and peer abuse. Perhaps you did not consider how this label would affect him throughout life. While I disagree with your mother's attitude of discord with you over this, i wonder if your choice was not some form of defiance to her. You may want to rethink how this name will negatively affect your child's socialization and future opportunities. Keep in mind that others with Christian sensibilities may harbor ill feelings toward your son just because his name is Lucifer ... teachers, potential employers, parents of siblings as well as siblings themselves. children can be very cruel. do you think this name is worth setting him up for the emotional scarring he will no doubt endure? while you may think its beautiful, you do have to consider the outcome. in my opinion, you need to put his feelings before your own.

It is a beautiful name, but when you choose a name for your child, you identify the meaning and it's origins. If you have done this, and still chose Lucifer, then one would question your reasons, but the decision is yours and you must live with it (as must he!). If you weren't aware of the meaning first off then more fool you!
