He is a two year old Lab that has flees but nothing has worked to get rid of them. I also have a Great Dane,Blond Lab,and a Jack Russel none of the other dogs are having this problem. I live in Indiana and have in the past been told by my vet that it could be a fungus(other Black Lab had it years ago) but it does not look the same .Is there anything I can use on him or give him?

Some dogs are more sensitive to the bite of fleas, some have flea allergies. Your lab may just be having a more severe reaction to the flea bites than the others, but you should still get rid of them on all of the dogs. Use Advantage or Frontline from your vet and also treat your house and yard. Diatomaceous earth is a good natural way to get rid of fleas in the house and yard and it won't hurt your dogs. Just get some from your home and garden store and sprinkle a moistened amount around the baseboards and in the cushions of the furniture. Don't inhale or let your pets inhale the dust because it can damage the mucous membranes and lungs, but if it is moistened first, it won't be floating around in the air. Sprinkle it around the foundation of your house and your porch where the entrances are. You can also use powdered sulfur around the perimeter of your property to repel fleas.

Give him a bath and let the shampoo soak on his fur for awhile so that if it IS fleas they will drown...Then rinse him off and use a moisturizing conditioner to help his skin heal and his fur come back in..If it is fleas..they bite and damage his skin and he will need special attention to keep the injured area free from more bites which will result in continued hair loss. Do this on a regular basis until he is healed up from the bites. Some baby oil rubbed on his fur all over will prevent the fleas making your doggy a condo/buffet since they cant breathe if they are covered in it. ( Plus its alot chaeper and less deadly to you pet than commercial flea products. And although he will look alittle funny with the 'greaser' look, he will look even sadder without his fur. AND he will be alot happier without the constant annoyance from these biting buggies. Ill bet he doesnt sleep very soundly right now and would appreciate a restful sleep instead. Treat your house if he is an indoor dog..even part time..because they can and WILL live in your carpet and furnishings and multiply faster than you can imagine. Another trick to help your pets is to add garlic to their food dish. Fleas dont seem to like the taste of garlic dog.

You need to take him back to a vet. If no over the counter medication has helped, it is time for professional help. Some types of parasites and infections can be life-threatening and/or could spread to other pets in the household.

If you had the same problem you would go to the doctor. Your pet deserves medical care just as much as you do.

I have owned two labs and both of them did this. There is nothing wrong. Labs have extra oil in their skin which makes them more prone to hot spots. This can easily be taken care of by ointment that you can buy at almost any store in the pet department or in any pet store. It works great!! More then likely they will have it come back. My one older dog had it on his bum, and also his arm pits. The other lab had it around the back of his ears and patches on his back.

If the other dogs are ok, its most likely not fleas... could just be boredom... or dry skin. How much exercise does he get in a day?
