Can anyone PLEASE tell me how to avoid nightmares, Is there anything I can do before I sleep to try to avoid them....I have a REALLY bad nightmare that makes me want to kill myself every time I wake up. Have already been in surgery for a nasty cut and burns I have inflicted on myself to try and stay awake to avoid them.

You should think of something that makes you really happy. For exmple....i dunno....horse riding. Now maybe think that you are horse riding with your favourie celebrity.

Focus on the positive. And if you have a nightmare (i have nightmares eventually) just tell yourself its not real. I had a really frightning nightmare recently and when i woke up i relised it wasn't real an i was happy again.

Whatever you do, don't use nightmares as an exuse to inflict harm on yourself. If you do feel like you are angry and need to let out steam, don't do it on yourself. Use helpful tactics like punching a pillow (it makes it fluffy afterward as well :]) or squezzing a stress ball.

Hope this is helpful =]

I can't tell you how to stop your nightmare, but I can tell you how to control it while it is happening and perhaps change the outcome to a more favorable one. Much research has gone into having controlled dreams and the methods used are various, but I will tell you what works for me. I trained myself to be more aware during a dream that it actually is a dream and that I have full control over what happens in them. For about two weeks, every night before I went to bed I would draw a big red A on the palm of my right hand and stare at it while repeating in my head, "I am Aware, and I am in control" until I fell asleep. Then during ANY dream, nightmare or pleasant one, I could look at the palm of my hand and sure enough, that big red A was there in the dream too. When I saw it in my dream, I would become aware that I was dreaming and that I am master of my dreamworld. At that point in the dream I can begin to ochestrate what happens. If I feel danger I can "fly" away or give myself ray gun hands and blast the "enemy". Now all I have to do in a dream is look at my hand, I don't need to draw the A there before bed because the awareness is still there without it now. I would suggest that you get professional help because recurring nightmares usually signify some type of anxiety in your waking life. The best thing would be to deal with whatever it is that is causing you to have these nightmares, but in the meantime, I hope you can learn to control them at least enough to allow you to feel less depressed when you wake up. Try doing a google search for controlled dreams and see if there are other methods that might work better for you.

I really feel for you. I am on a lot of medications and some nights I would rather stay up than go to bed and have bad dreams. Try to get the bad thoughts all out of your head before you go to sleep then try laying down to go to sleep. I bet it will help you in aiding you to go to sleep and maybe it will stop the bad nightmares.

Maybe you are taking too many antihistamines...sometimes i get nightmares, after i stop taking them...or any other med you might be taking that is causing these..but then again,...you might have a violent nature and an overactive imagination and want to self inflict punishment, for something you BELIEVE you are guilty of..when in fact you are not...Please pray on this, as that is really you're best action..through Jesus and ask God to relieve you of these evil thoughts..

Why don't you ask your Dr. to give you a prescription for an antidepressant to help you sleep and it will calm your suicidal thoughts. Make sure you aren't eating anything crazy at night, some foods just don't sit right. But it sounds like this is deeper than your food. Also you can purchase a sound machine that will let you hear soothing sounds while you sleep. It can help alot with sleep. You condition yourself to fall asleep when listening. This takes some getting used to. But I really think you need antidepressants.

Road Rage Pete,
Are you on any medication? Certain medications can cause nightmares. So can falling asleep with a nicotine patch on your body.
Before going to sleep tell yourself you are going to get a good nights sleep. Also tell yourself you will dream of only good things.
Think happy thoughts before falling asleep.
When I have scarey dreams I ask the Lord to take them away.

If you are self harming this suggests a deep seated anxiety about certain aspects in your life. You need to discuss this with either a professional or somebody close to you. You may then begin to understand why the nightmares are occurring and by tackling your issues hopefully your nights will become more peaceful.

Make an appointment IMMEDIATELY with a PSYCHIATRIST!!! Sounds to me like you need some medical attention!

Call your local Mental Health Clinic OR go to your Local Hospitals Emergency Room for a Psychological evaluation.
