Self-help: Always blow your nose gently, one nostril at a time, keeping your mouth open; if you blow both nostrils together, catarrh may be forced up eustachian tube and cause Middle ear infection, and if you keep your mouth closed air may be pushed up the eustachian tube with such force that it ruptures the eardrum. Inhaling hot steam helps to decongest the airways, but do not use Friar’s balsam or other additives as these may antidote whatever homeopathic remedy you are taking; by the same token, dry air is bad for a stuffed up nose, so make an effort to humidify the rooms where you work or sleep, especially if they have central heating.

If your catarrh is caused by dust or pollens, an ioniser may be helpful. If you smoke, try to stop, and avoid smoke-filled air. If you suffer from constant catarrh, you might gain some relief by sniffing water up the nose to prevent the inside from drying out; make sure the water is warm, sniff it half-way up the nose, then blow it out; do not draw the water all the way up the nose and into the back of the throat as this may force water into the sinuses and lead to infection. Over-the-counter nasal sprays or drops should only be used if stuffiness prevents you sleeping or if you suffer from pressurization problems when flying; they can be given to babies if catarrh is causing feeding or sleeping difficulties, but make sure they are the right strength and use them very sparingly as they can damage the sensitive lining of the nose. Vitamin B complex, Vitamin C, zinc, and iron are recommended. A combination of ‘Q’ tissue salts and Potters Antifect are of value in some people. Some people find benefit from eating horseradish and increasing the amount of liquids they drink.

Does it vary which nostril is blocked according to which side you are lying on? If so you may have a nasal polyp which is an overgrowth of the lining deep inside the nose. It is not at all serious but can cause symptoms of blockage and catarrh. It usually caused by a sustained allergy type of situation.
Try using a steroid nasal spray which is available over the counter (as Beconase) for a couple of weeks. This is perfectly safe and devoid of side effects when used according to the instructions. If this does provide relief, but the symptoms recur on completing the course, it may well be worthwhile discussing the situation with your GP again.

i suffered with catarrh when i was a child and was put on two medicines and told (like allergies) i would probably grow out of it. I think i have basically grown out of it, idon't suffer with colds very often, but, being a smoker (doh!) i feel mucus builds up at the back of nose and throat and any dairy products will make the condition worse!!! I do remember in my local small shop i couldn't help continually sniffing and the grocer snapping at me to blow my nose, could have been only 7yrs old! cried all the way home!

If I understand correctly, catarrh is an infection in the nose and sinuses. Nasal lavage is a good solution to the problem of thick mucous and blockage. into 1 liter of water, but 1 tsp of salt and 1/2 tsp of sodium bicarbonate. Boil it and bottle it. Spray that in your nose about 1 hour before you go to bed and it wil help unblock your nose.

I have the same problem but I have learned to live with it. It might be allergies. I never had that problem before but ever since I moved to California, I've had that problem.

What do you mean by catarrha? Stopped up head and sinuses? The term means nothing medically. If that is it, you may have an allergy problem.
