"There are no medical tests for diagnosing autism. An accurate diagnosis must be based on observation of the individual's communication, behavior, and developmental levels. However, because many of the behaviors associated with autism are shared by other disorders, various medical tests may be ordered to rule out or identify other possible causes of the symptoms being exhibited."
This is what I thought, but I double checked it.

Robin is right, there are no medical tests for autism, they simply don't know enough about it yet to know what kind of tests to make to check for it. However, a brain scan can usually show that the child has autism, but that's about it. We refused the scan for our child, his symptoms said enough that he was mildly autistic and we didn't wan to put him through that. The only tests they have available are for Down's Syndrome, cystic fibrosis, and spina bifida, and even those are not at all accurate. There might be testing available now for things like MD, I don't know though. My last pregnancy was two years ago,and it was just the three I mentioned. Pretty much, you have to wait until the child is a toddler before it can be diagnosed, and that depends on the severity. I know of kids who weren't diagnosed until around age 7 because it was so mild.
