i just hate to see those dogs and other dangerous types because i had a dog and he was attacked by them. so now when i go jogging i freak out if i see one because people are irresponsible and don't keep them on the leash
thanks
oh and please don't write how nice they are because there's a big time difference if you get attacked by a labrador retriever or a pitbull
i'd love to have a dog but i'm too afraid. so now i have a bunny instead, :))
actually i don't hate the dogs but i can't stand the people who own them and usually these are morons who treat their dogs very very bad.

I got over it bymy husband bringing one home and then going out on deployment and I've had to train him. The ones I know who are being treated well are just big puddles of love. and they're stubborn... Fence Jumpers, chewers (and smart... he chewed a big hole through the fence behind a bush so I wouldn't see... dug *under* the fence... he just wants to play with other dogs so badly!
Yes, they belong on a leash. So do all dogs. But accidents happen.

When youre jogging be aware of any dog you see ahead or beside you but show it absolutely no notice.Don't look at it as you go by.Tell yourself it's not there so it can't hurt you.And do not change your pace unless it's very close.
If you know where the dog is before you get there cross the street to jog by.
If you encounter dogs running loose stop running.Put your head up,shoulders back and WALK by them carefully but confidently.Be sure to not swing your arms.Keep them at your sides. You should also do this as you pass dogs behind a fence. They're bored and you jogging by gives them an excuse to run and jump and bark. It's a game to them, you're the playing piece.
If dog blocks your path or runs at you just stand there.Don't try to talk to it.Don't try to pet it and for Gods sake don't look at it.Just stand still and let it check you out.Once it sees you're no threat it'll walk away.Don't move until you feel it's safe to do so.If you try to take a step and the dog acts in a threatening manner stop again.
And instead of moaning about a problem be the one to answer it!Whenever you see a dog you know is being abused or neglected take note of the address you see it at and turn the owners in!

Start out with a small pit bull, a puppy. Not to own, just to get to know them. They are sweet dogs when raised properly. Try the animal shelter. They might let you get to know one. Pit bulls are high energy dogs. You may never actually like them. Any breed can be scary at times. Please don't pigeon-hole them into catagories. Personally, I'd rather have a pit bull than a chow.

There's a really good show on TV right now called "The Dog Whisperer." He's featured pit bulls and other aggressive dogs on some of the shows. If you have cable or satellite, I'd suggest you watch him. The guy is really good!

My advice? Don't get near one! In the large city of Detroit, minors (children under the age of 18) are not allowed to even walk a pit bull on a leash. If caught, the pit bull is taken away and euthanized (killed) and a fine is given to the parents. Just stay away from them, all of them, it's a matter of life and death. Your own dog? Go for a small friendly breed, they are listed by the American Kennel Club with their personalities so you can choose the best one to fit your personality. I share your feelings! Good Luck.

you can only do this with time, one way you can get over it is by trying to be around a pitbull that is on a leash or something to hold its distance and try to get closer to it each day/week/month

you shouldn't. they are prone to turn on you. i own a bulldog and he's friendly and plays rough, but i never let my gaurd down. i'm with you thogh, most owner,s tend to have them just so they can fight, and say oh! what a big man i am.

Well, I've been around gentle pitbulls and vicious ones and all I can say is, just be on your guard with them. I don't like them and because they sense it, I stay clear of them.
