apart from going to the vet

You need to know what kind of rat poison your dog ate, but generally rat poisons cause a dog to bleed to death internally and you may see bleeding from the mouth and the rectum.

If you think your dog just ate the rat poison in the last few minutes, induce vomiting by giving your dog hydrogen peroxide by mouth (or ipecac if you have some). Take the dog to the vet immediately. If possible, carry the box the poison came in with you to the vet.

Since rat poison prevents the dog's blood from clotting, Vitamin K is the antidote of choice and should be given as an injection by your vet, followed by pills or capsules for up to six weeks. my vet recommends testing the dogs blood clotting factor time for a few weeks after the initial exposure.

No "apart from going to the vet." The dog will die without medical attention. Try eating rat poison yourself and see what happens. Don' think that you need a dog.

Follow the package instructions from the rat poison. Not knowing what is the active ingredient of the poison no one can give you the proper answer.

You have to make the dog throw up. That is the first and most important thing. But it's easier if you already have contacted the vet, because he has special injections to cause that.

It should not be Yahoo questions. Hello! Why not the vet? Don't you love your dog? Or did you just make this up to get attention. My bet is the latter!

IF it was a warfarin compound, he will probably be all right with injections of vitamen K. If it is arsenic based, getting him to vomit is essential. Then, administration of activated charcoal.
