Ok, so I'm a trainer and for people who are trying to trim their entire body, but really not looking for any strength or power, i do recommend a few sets of pushups. but let me explain.
pushups .. depending on your fitness, you should easily be able to begin doing in sets 25 in no time. and many sets of 25. Any exercise you do in reps of more than 25 are really just cardiovascular work and breaking down your muscle to be used in that manner, which also means if you're working out your pectorals at the gym (benchpresses etc) you're negating a certain amount of that working out.
However, its a GREAT, supplement to running, and is of course much better than nothing. if you're looking for better methods for developing muscle size, strength or power (all are different) contact me through this site.

absolutely, getting up to at least 50 a day is a good goal, try wide based (arms spread further apart then shoulder width, clapping ( on the up motion push off hard and clap your hands together, good coordination training) and diamonds (placing the hands together next to each other thumb and forefinger touching to look like diamond) vore some variation, and other muscle groups in your back & shoulders to build them up.
you won't get size, but your upper body strength will definitely improve.
If you can; do as many of each type, then work up to 1 set each at ten a piece, and in a couple of weeks, you'll prob'ly see a difference.

Yes, you can. The pushups are a nice compound exercise that mainly builds pectoral muscles. It also will work on biceps, forearms, and triceps.
