During the Arpartied era in South Africa passbooks were used to restrict the movement and domocile of people. This benefited the privialiged few at the expense of the majority. Is this not what is happening on a Global scale? Migration historically is a very effecient way of transfering ideas and knowledge. Are we holding back human development because we currently are only focusing on allowing capital to move freely and not humans. Also could it not help reduce ignorance and fear of others, as this seems to me to be the route cause (or at least the catalyst) of so much conflict in the world.

I totally agree with this assessment. People have arbitrarily divided the world into artificial divisions. I firmly believe in the ideal of "One World" with an international government and local autonomy. Just like the second law of thermodynamics, where the movement of particles takes place from higher concentration to lower concentration until the state of even distribution is reached. Same applies to the world too. In the long-term population and resources will be evenly distributed throughout the world.

I wouldn't be really hasty in abandoning the idea of countries, nice as it might seem, it still falls in the 'give the world a big cookie' department, there's about 6.6 billion people in the world,
I think borders kind of help even things out.

If you were the only one on your block that had a job, a car, some money, that kind of thing, you'd have a lot of 'friends' in short order, chances are more 'friends' than you'd really want.
People need to learn to do for themselves, fix their own countries, take a little pride in the place where they live, and work in concert with their neighbors to try and improve things.
America's become this magnet for hard-luck cases and opportunists around the world because ours is one of the few countries that has something resembling a functioning economy. Other nations can invest in their infrastructure, building the things that their people need, promote things like business, then they, too, will have a path to wealth and a better life. But, inviting half the planet to move in isn't going to work out.
