Since when are religious people against capital punishment? They read "The Lord is My Shepherd" to you all the way to the chair. An eye for an eye, and all that.

If you had kept reading, you'd have found out that God is big on forgiving and redeeming. That was the whook.ole "New Testament" thing, where Jesus came to spread the peace and love towards mankind. Sometimes you have to read more than the first chapter to get the gist of a book.

God gives life and can take it away. It is a belief.
Capital punishment is anger directed to fear of some future injury. It is not a human right to take life away (very debatable).
Nevertheless, respect for life can spring from the basic belief of maintaining the dignity and sanctity of life.

Part of believing in God is to believe that life came into existence for a reason (at least, for many believers) - and therefore it is not for us to arbitrarily take it away. So for those believers, it is a matter of consistency of one's beliefs.
