there is a program called chntpw
I use a slax disk and the chntpw
module and burn a disk that has that on it.
you can get slax here http://slax.org
Then I use chntpw to change the Administrator password.
If you own the computer and the windows license it is legal.
It is probably better to buy a full version of windows to avoid any legal issues. Microsoft would insist on it. If you use Windows pay the piper. Personally I prefer Linux.

as they said, removing CMOS battery will not reset Windows XP password, you have one of two solutions
1. Free: if you have a copy of windows XP, then just format the computer using it and install it again
2. Not Free: download the software called Active password Changer from www.password-changer.com/ and install it on a floppy disk, then run it, it will reset the password for you!

Try leaving the password field blank - unless the previous owner actually set a password, the default is for it to be blank.

The Windows XP software does not belong to you. Be honest and buy an OEM copy online and install it:)

Download, unzip, burn .ISO to CD, boot from CD, follow instructions. Removing the CMOS battery is not gonna remove a Windows XP password!! Duh.
