T-bone (Mother= Staffie, father=pittie) Has lasted 9 hrs... loose in the house... that was when he was 6 months old (it was quite unintentional... I'd planned to be back much sooner) The key is chew toys! and, if he's gonna have an accident... at least he does it right by the door...

No longer than 3 hours. Think how often a baby goes to the toilet, a pup will need to go just as often. Even an adult dog will need to go every few hours (I know I do). Dogs are social animals and it is unfair to leave them on their own for long periods of time. There really is no point in getting a dog if it will be alone all day, just waiting for you to come back from work. The dog would be very unhappy so it is important that you put the dogs needs first. Cats on the otherhand are less sociable and may be a better option for you if you wish a pet but work during the day.

How anyone could think that 12 hrs is acceptable to leave a dog is beyond me completely, why have a dog if you are going to leave it all day on it's own? (sorry that was aimed at one of the other answers)
Back to your question, I think that the longest a puppy should be left is 4 hrs TOPS!!, it is reckoned that a pup will play feed poo/wee and generally be awake for about 1 hour and then sleep for 4 hours then be awake again for 1 hr and sleep for 4 hrs, I have a 5 mth old GSD pup and she used to do around about this, though she stays awake longer and sleeps less now, so 4 hours is about the limit, and the safest thing is to use a crate so that you know that it can't come to any harm, also leave a radio on for background noise and may be a couple of toys in the crate also.

ideally not for more than 4 hours. If you have to leave it from a whole day you will have problems house training it. Solitary confinement is cruel. If it is left all day long, then sees you for a couple of hours in the evening, then left alone again for 8 hours while you sleep that is unacceptable. Most reputable breeders will not sell puppies to people who work all day long. How will you manage to give it the 4 meals a day if you are out all day? How will you be able to take it out for the toilet during the day?
I am involved in rescue and most of the problems dog cause are because they are left alone all day long so they start to chew, wreck the house, piddle everywhere and bark and howl.

Question is how long can you leave any pup alone in the house while at work?
Not for long. Electrical cables would be the worst threat. I would put it on a par to leaving a small child at home alone. Would you do that?
Make sure puppy is completely safe in the house. It is your responsibility. If puppy is not pup/baby/child safe then put pup outside in a secure area.

I have a staff he's 18 month old now, but when he was a pup we had one of those big massive cages for dogs, we kept him in that with his bed and water, only while we were out, not all the time. I if I was working a full 9 hour shift, I would get a relative to go in and feed him and let him out for half an hour.

A pup will need out every couple of hours. Have someone pop in to let him out and give him some company.

Only a few hours, or you will have a very unhappy pup that will chew your home up because s/he is bored. Oh and there will be wee and poo to deal with too.

Wait till you can spend the time needed with a dog, if you are working it's not a good idea to have animals that rely on you so much.
