My daughter had a sleepover today, and I kept noticing her friend itching her scalp. I finally asked her some questions and it seems that it was possible that she may have been treated recently. Anyhow, I asked if she would like me to look at her scalp and she wanted me to. I could see bugs crawling in her hair - they actually looked like small fleas - although we supposedly do not have fleas in Alaska. I had her Mom come get her, but, I am wondeirng if I should shampoo my daughters hair with Rid and spray the areas they played in - just to be safe. HELP!!!

Thank you everyone, I just got through all 3 of my daughters & myself. I am not sure what the girl had was lice, because they were small dark bugs & lots of them. Everything I have read said white bugs. But, no matter what they were I am done for the night. Thank you all, what a nightmare!! Good night & I will select the best answer in the morning.

My daughters got head lice a few months ago. I treated them with the shampoo and did a nit check for days, it took many hours but it was worth it. I also went to the CDC website for additional info. I cleaned from top to bottom in my house and bagged up all of their stuffed animals for 4 weeks. My husband and I never treated ourselves, but we did check eachother for 2 weeks. It takes up to 14 days for an egg to hatch so just keep checking daily. If you decide to use the shampoo for lice, DON'T do it back to back, it can cause a chemical burn. Follow instructions on the bottle. I was also worried about my kids hair drying out from the treatment so i went to my salon and bought deep conditioning treatment (Paul Mitchell). Just keep an eye on your daughter. I do know how frustrating it can be to have a child with lice around yours. Mine came home from vacation with it and to this day no one can tell me where they got it. Good luck though, I hope she doesnt get it.

I work in a school that's from Pre-K - 2nd grade. Your best bet is to wash all the girls hair and probably yours, too. But, the shampoo is very strong you could use it only every 7 days. And wash all the linens in hot water. And if you have rugs you can spray all the areas even the mattress and sofas. And if it's cold I suggest you wash there coats, hats and sweaters. To let you know that the shampoo will kill the live lice, but you have to remove the eggs with your hands the shampoo won't do anything to them. Do it now before there's too much to handle and then you're probably force to cut your daughters hair real short. I hope this helps.

You've no need to spray your home. Lice only live on human heads. That said yes treat your daughters hair immediately
Wash it as normal then apply normal conditioner and thoroughly comb through before rinsing this will remove almost all in one hit.
It's still a good idea to repeat this procedure a couple times more when your daughters hair is normally washed, just to be on the safe side.

The bugs aren't white. The eggs are white. The bugs are dark.

Yes - treat everyone. Follow the instructions on the shampoo box about stuffed animals, bedding, upholstered furniture. Clean everything everything else with surface cleaners. Use the special comb on hair (ammonia-cleaning between heads) even if you see nothing because you can miss one nit.

And then keep checking every head in the family for the next month or so. If you see either bugs or eggs treat again.

If you are conscientious and treat effectively it is entirely possible to head off any infestation in your family before it turns into a head-full of horrible, creepy, awful, bugs.

If you think that your daughter may have been exsposed to lice i would really check her out. I dont think there is a need to treat her with RID unless you can see little white specs in her hair. Although to me on the safed side i would wash all the clothing and bedding that the other child may have come in contact with

not only do you have to shampoo.. You also have to go through their heads hair by hair and pick the bugs/eggs out.. The shampoo doesn't kill them just kind of shocks them for awhile... You also have to wash all yoru bedding, and put all your stuffies in garbage bags tied for two weeks

Lice can be a pain. It's best to be overcautious.

Here is a site that may help you in treating lice:

YES. treat everyone in the house for it to be safe. be sure to wash all bedding, clothes, caps in warm/hot water. if you want to view a pic of one i believe you can see one at www.webmd.com using their search engine, it will also provide you with info. lol, dont waste too much time trying to track down exactly where it came from because the girl you found it on was somehow brought into contact and the contact was somehow brought into contact. Do let the mother/father of child know, it is possible they dont
