I believe abortion is wrong. The issue ultimately comes down to the question: What is that thing inside a womans womb? If you could convince me that it's just a blob of protoplasm( a fetus ), then I would say it's up to you....if you want to have an abortion....no problem. I don't think the evidence is showing that. With the new high tech procedures doctors have to see inside the womb I think it's becoming common knowledge that that thing is a living human being in there. Even the anti-abortion crowd is beginning to admit it. The anti-abortionists used to say "it's my body, I can do what I want with it". But that thing inside of you is not your body. It's a separate body inside of your body. It has it's own heart beat, it's own brainwaves, It's own lungs, kidneys, It's a real baby. Fifty % of the time it's a different sex than the mother. Often it has a different blood type.
It's not just her body. That baby is going to come out 9 months later. The mother is going to go on living after the baby is out. Try taking out the heart or the lungs or the kidney and see if she survives. Those are part of her body.
If , in fact, it is a real baby, then abortion is wrong. They say "well it's a baby but it's not yet a person". That was the excuse they used to kill black slaves in the 1850's and to kill jews in nazi germany. They said blacks and jews were not persons. Anyhow, how would they know it's not a person. How could they possibly know when personhood started. They've put tiny microphones in the womb and heard the baby cry. They've accidently pricked the baby with a needle in the womb and the baby went scrambling to the other side of the womb. It feels pain.
Since you don't know for sure, if you're going to error, you error on the side of life.
As far as rape is concerned, rape is a terrible thing but why punish the baby for the rape. The baby is as innocent as the woman. If they are going to allow women to have abortions because of rape, they should say that if the rapist is caught and he confesses, they should bring the woman who was raped down to the jail where they are holding the rapist, give her a 357 magnum and let her blow his brains out. If a woman has the right to kill an innocent baby, she should have the right to kill the guilty rapist.
As far as possible death during childbirth, I'm not sure I can help you with that. I guess I've never thought it through. Being a man, I guess abortion is not something I've thought about alot. I am a christian. I do believe God will forgive you if you've had one. You need to go to him. If you haven't had one but you're thinking about it, I'd think twice. One of the things the abortion crowd is trying to hide is the longterm psychological effects of having an abortion. They never seem to get over it psychologically. No matter how much they try to decieve themselves, in their heart they know that that really was a baby. There's also physical effects later on in life including a high rate of cancer(I think it's cervical or it could be uterin cancer, I'm not sure, it was a while ago that I read the studies from the national health institute).

I personally don't believe it is right under any circumstance at all. There have been MANY times when a doctor has said that a mother WILL die giving birth to a baby when it was actually done the mother did not die! What then? You have an innocent child's life murdered and a healthy mother without her baby!! It's horrible!!
My mother was told several times that she'd die having the baby she was going to have at that time (throughout several children) and that the baby might die, too. She opted to have the child anyway, OF COURSE!!! She did not die, nor did my siblings. It's just a HORRIBLE thought that one of my little siblings would not be here on account of murder from his own parents!! ugh! sick thought!

Also, I was raped and we thought I was pregnant for about a month before I finally got tested and I had decided before hand that I would NOT abort/KILL a baby! Especially since I knew it was another child of God and it wasn't the baby's fault for what a wicked man did! I was going to give the baby up for adoption. Very good and simple way to solve those kinds of problems without including murder.

My husband's cousin was violently raped. She delivered the precious baby boy and gave him up for adoption.

There is CHOICE when choosing to spare the life of a baby! All the time! The choice to choose good over evil, the choice to give this child a life and a chance, the choice to be a better person, the choice to give this child a different home if you can't support this child, and more I won't go into right now for lack of time and energy.

There's my thought.

i sincerely hope you're not a victim or anything. only then will you be able to take this answer as it's meant.

i wanna clarify that i'm speaking from a christian's pov.

honestly, i was expecting more of a debate if abortion amounts to murder, and thus is wrong. it goes to show that the answer-ers (sic) are focussed enough on the question. cheers to u all.

but i must say that in order to answer your question, we must first consider if abortion is indeed wrong.

my personal belief is that abortion is wrong, because it is, simply, murder (the taking of another sentient life)

i've read many articles debating if a foetus can be considered a person or a life, and many support their answers by considering when the heart or the mind or what-have-you is formed in the baby's body, and set several days as the benchmark of considering a foetus, a person.

my belief is that the Bible says God considers a foetus a person, regardless of how many days have passed in the pregnancy. my proof?
"Your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
Psalms 139:16

This shows that God considers the baby in the womb a person. even before the individual organs and limbs and other parts of the body are formed, God already sees the person and has lovingly preordained his days. so if the foetus or watever u wanna call it, is considered a person by God, it then follows that aborting a pregnancy is tantamount to murder. and murder is wrong, whichever moral code one may subscribe to.

let's tackle the 2nd question 1st. you can clearly see from the above mentioned answers that even doctors may be wrong. i mean, sorry to all resident doctors, but flukes do happen. i've yet to hear of cases where the birth of a child will DEFINITELY kill the mother, and which cannot be avoided thru surgery or careful monitoring.

if anyone can confirm when another person will die from disease etc please tell me. i'm low on cash recently and a convenient lottery strike would help.

seriously though, recent advances in medicine should, hopefully reduce such agonizing decisions. no doubt, surgery carries risks, but what thing in life doesn't? for christians we have an added hope of prayer and the assurance that all things work for the good of those who believe in His name.

rape issues are far different.

a pregnancy resulting from a rape is no fault of the child's. and no matter how much of a lowlife the biological father may be (rapists rank all the way down there with roaches and rats as far as i'm concerned.) the sad fact is that the mother is, well, the mother of the child. and how sad it is if a mother has to decide whether or not to kill her own child!

an alternative solution would be to eventually put the child up for adoption. though chances are that it'll be difficult to persuade the mother to do so once she holds that precious life in her hands.

but having given my views regarding rape and birth complications, i must say that the final decision lies with the mother and the family. no one but themselves know just what the mothertobe has to go thru, and face, in deciding whether or not to continue the pregnancy. and to all us guys, we have to get out of our stupid points of views and understand just wat the ladies feel in such cases.

i must say one last thing, though. i've yet to see a mother who has given birth and regretted not aborting the child, but i personally know of a few that have aborted and regretted.

cheers.

I believe that abortion is wrong in any circumstances, whatsoever. If you were raped, I believe that you should just go ahead and have the baby and then if you do not wish to keep it, you should give it up for adoption. If I myself were going to die from the birth of the baby, then I still believe that abortion is wrong. Abortion is wrong, in my opinion, because I see the unborn baby as a human and to kill a human is murder and murder is wrong. I don't know what your beliefs are and I don't mean to insult you if we have different view points, but this is what I believe.

I believe that as a man, it is not my place to tell a woman she cannot have an abortion.

As a Christian, I believe there are alternatives, even if the pregnancy results from rape... however, I also recognize that some people are not psychologically equipped to care for a child that comes from such a violation - even to the point that they may do harm to themselves or to the unborn child.

As a Minister and psychologist, I understand people on both sides of this question have valid arguments... and so allow me to interject an interesting piece of information and see if it changes anyone's mind

Leviticus 17:11 tells us the life of the flesh is in the blood. Medical science has proven that blood vessels begin to develop after about 16 days, and the heart starts pumping fluid around day 20, with red blood cells appearing the next day... (day 21)... so... following Biblical logic... wouldn't abortion be ok before 21 days???

As far as the girl who has to choose between her life and the life of her unborn child... most doctors will insist that her life takes precedence...

Is abortion wrong? Maybe, but so is judging others, and you don't see any shortage of people doing that. Why look, even right here in this list of answers above mine. (and below I'd imagine.)

Shame people aren't more concerned with DOING the right thing, living a good life, and loving one another and not so facinated with controling what others do.

What is important to me though is the LAW. Currently abortion is LEGAL. by that definition, a woman should be allowed to make her own decision without harrassment or threats.

Something about 'rendering unto Ceasar' as I recall?

I apologize for the insult, but you trust religion way to much. You should read the history of religion and then you will understand the negative political implications of avortion. It is basically about manpower. EXTRA: braindead patients are taken off the machines. Humans kill animals all the time (chickens, pigs), they don't feel guilty because they function only by instinct. A fetus has no memories, and for the first few months neither a brain or instincts. A fetus is just a conglomerate of cells... in harsh words, a piece of flesh, just like an appendice or an extra toe.

Rhetorical: What is wrong in bringing an unwanted(abuse, accident, lack of education, poverty) child into the world?
What is wrong in renouncing an burden on one's life? What is wrong in removing an appendice? Don't allow religion (AKA group pressure) to make your decision, you will always know what is best for you and you should act accordingly.

The number of abortions that occur after rapes are minuscule. The vast majority of abortions are done simply because raising a child is inconvenient for the mother, not because she was raped.

If the child must be removed to save the life of the mother, then why must it first have its brains sucked out and be sliced into pieces? Children are born premature every day in the US and most of them survive. Induced labor or Cesarean section may be necessary to save the life of the mother, but abortion never is.

Abortion is still considered wrong, even under the circumstances you described. Because even though the woman is an innocent victim of a crime or circumstance, the unborn baby is, too, and shouldn't be murdered for someone else's mistake or action. If the pregnancy is potentially fatal to the mother, measures can be taken to protect the mother's life, as long as it doesn't directly kill the baby. If the unborn baby dies as an indirect action taken to preserve the mom's life, then it's not considered an abortion.

Hello!! :o) It's a very tough question to answer. For anyone. But I THINK that God loves a pregnant woman as much as He loves the one growing inside of her. And I consider them two separate individual human beings. Therefore - I think it's wrong to abort even in the case of rape - but OK to abort IF the 'one growing inside of her' will end the life of the woman. For we have a right to defend ourselves from death. Craig!! :o)
