Hi
Ill be moving to NY in a couple of years-after im done with my hotel mgmt degree-I will be starting off with $45,000 annualy and my girlfriend makes $40,000 already. So we're willing to spend 1500$ -2000$ on a 1 br apt.

MOST IMPOTANTLY
I hate the bay area coz its too quiet-i want a neighboorhood where i get up at 3.00 AM and i can see people moving about or cars going around-I love the busy street noise. When i get up at 7.00 AM i wanna see people going to work and everyone in a hurry.
Do you think midtown East is what im looking for-and also is midtown east safer than midtown west.
I found a LOT of listings on craigslist for Upper east side,Upper West side,Midtown for that price range.
Thanks
Andy

Well, I think the Upper Westside is pretty lively, especially the area around Columbia University, but safety varies a lot from block to block, so you really need to find people who live very close to where you are considering renting and ask them about specific locations. Find out where your future co-workers live.

Where will you be working? It saves a lot of time if you can take just one subway train and get to work instead of having to change. And the subway really is the only way (besides walking) to get around. If you're in a car, a cab, or a bus, traffic is very, very slow a lot of the time. The subway works well and is probably safer than the street.

Well first off, let me forewarn you that a "lively neighborhood" can get REALLY old QUICK!! I live off of 34th street (midtown) and thought that I'd always love this area since it's always "happening". Not so! I'm actually more exhausted because of it, and at first it's hard to get used to all the traffic that goes through here even at night. You might want to try Chelsea or the Village. Anyway, if you truly love NY I think you'll be pleased no matter where you live. Also, you should take a trip here a couple of times before you move so that you can scope out different areas.

Believe me when i tell you. I'm positive that Midtown is the place to live based on what you've told me. You can get a nice loft there too. Or a nice apt. But the rent is gonna be crazy in that location. try to get something as close to broadway as possible. That way you'll be close to 42nd street. And that is always open. Well things start to close around 2 am except the bars, lounges and clubs. Some of those close too at 2 am. But people are always walking around and just hanging out.

The way things are going, you may need to jump on an apartment now for what your looking to spend. The rents here keep going up and they keep giving landlord rent increases. And if really all depends on how big you want your apartment to be. You can pay that much money and in up in an apartment that is no bigger than a jail cell. Try the outer Boro's, they are nice and they have people roaming the street all hours of the night too. Just find the right one. You could find something bigger and cheaper too. At what you willing to spend, might be wise to invest in a Condo or Co-Op.

I would recommend anywhere downtown--maybe East Village. Upper West side is more interesting / lively than either Upper East or Midtown east, imo.

parts of Brooklyn and Queens are interior 1/2-hour through subway of NYU/the off-broadway district. Spend your time on Craigslist, searching for residences/roommate situations that sound strong and then checking the position they're on a map and what they value, to get a sense of your economic and geographic concepts. There are some enclaves in new york that are not as loopy intense priced as something (e.g. Washington Heights on the north end, parts of the East Village and top East area that are quite a concepts from the subway) yet maximum probable, Brooklyn and Queens (and the Bronx, in case you'll locate something captivating close to an convey prepare) are more beneficial reasonable. strong success.

If you're a 3:00 AM person, I suggest the West or East Village.

i am sorry, but it is highly unlikely you will find midtown east for $1-2 k a month, maybe a tiny 400 square feet studio will even be hard to find...

midtown east is yuppie/preppy j crew.
midtown west is artist/performers old navy.
