Whether it lands butter side down or up is largely due to the height the toast is dropped from and the way it was knocked off from, oh yeah and pure chance. Think if the toast is spinning (side over side) slowly as it falls, then the toast must finish with an incomplete rotation, ie. 2.5, 3.5, or 4.5 spins, so that it falls butterside down. That is what needs to happen, whether is does or not is pure chance as there is far too many other variables to consider to make a firm prediction.

during the middle ages, the average height of people was shorter than it is today. today our door frames, benches, sinks, you name it are all higher from the ground. as we butter the toast (face side up), higher than we used to (in the middle ages), the toast performs an extra half turn if we drop it. this lands the toast face side down and we ruin our breakfast. back in the middle ages, the toast would not have enough time to rotate that extra half turn and primarily would land face side up. the law of averages:)

It doesnt, its just that when it lands toast side down it doesnt cause you any grief so you dont 'put' it in your memeory. When it falls butter side down you have to pick out dog ends & cat fur from it & make the choice to eat it or start again...it causes you trouble, you 'put' it in your memory & it stays there & is built upon every time the random event turns out that way.

This was actually tested on "The Myth Busters". It showed that the butter side down was not any more often than butter side up.

The bread does x number of revolutions or "flips before it lands. As you always drop it from about the same height it always lands on the same side. Try carrying your bread upside down.

even though this may sound strange but its because the butter make that side heavier so that side reaches the floor first

weight distribution + gravity + density of the one side of toast = buttered up vinyl.

Have you never considered that you might in fact have buttered the wrong side?
