Like the title says, what kind of dog is Scooby Doo from the classic kids cartoon? Does the "real" dog if any, really have black spots?

Scooby Doo is a Great Dane. The creators debated between making him a sheepdog or a great dane and great dane won out.

Scooby is FOR SURE a Great Dane, there is even an episode that states this, its the one where there are evil dog nappers & Scooby has to pose as a champion award winning great dane to pose as bait for the crooks

I would guess Great Dane, but I have a suspicion that he's a mutt. Mutts can actually be really nice dogs. Besides, he talks. How many Great Danes do you know that can talk?
