As you know, the Laupa and Winchester rounds will not interchange. The Laupa was developed for the Military to fill the gap between the standard NATO round (the .308 Winchester also known as the 7.62x51 NATO) and the .50 caliber Browning machine-gun bullet. It is a sniper round and is extremely accurate. It shoots a 250 grain bullet at 3,000 feet per second. It can penetrate body armor at over a thousand yards and has a maximum effective range exceeding eighteen-hundred yards.

The .338 Winchester Magnum was developed for hunting North American big game. Winchester designated their top-of-the-line hunting rifle, the Model 70, as the "Alaskan" when it first became available in .338 Win.

The Winchester round offers more diverse bullet weights including one in 250 grains. That one, however, only achieves a velocity of approx. 2,660 feet per second.

Both should be more than adequate for North American big game, with the Winchester offering a wider range of bullet weights. Final Note: Remington also makes a .338 Remington Ultra Magnum which should rival the Laupa, at least in velocity. You might want to check the charts on this round before making your final purchase decision. Personally I believe I would purchase the Winchester, simply because of the diverse bullet weights.

The laupa mag was developed by the military for extremely long range sniper action, it is the most accurate long range round. The win mag is a Winchester round developed for big game like elk or bear, for when you need knock down power.

If you got the cash for that kind of serious firepower? I'd take the Win mag for the ammo availabilty. Balistically, like others have said it's at long range the lupa shines.

H seems to have the right idea about all of this. I will add to his fine presentation that the .340 Weatherby Magnum is another gun in this caliber to consider. I have a .460 Weatherby. They are expensive and fine guns.

To sum it up quickly. Lapua is gonna shoot farther, flatter and hit harder, but the ammo is way higher priced and harder to find if it's something you ever need in a pinch. You're call from there, if you got the $$$, and the fever for the biggest and best, I'd think about that Lapua.
