I have a metal front door that needs painted on the outside badly. I am no expert in this department. I know I need a paint that will cover metal but how I do I put it on? Can I use a roller like I did my inside walls or can I spray paint the outside door. Any suggestions would be great.

I KNOW I'M JUST A SILLY LITTLE OLE WOMAN BUT EVERYONE GETS SO EXCITED ABOUT PAINTING WITH SUCH TECHNICAL METHODS, IT JUST MAKES MORE WORK. PAINT WILL STICK TO JUST ABOUT ANYTHING. I HAVE TWO METAL DOORS ON MY HOUSE, ONE IS A FRENCH STORM TYPE DOOR AND ONE IS A STORM SCREEN DOOR. I USED A DARK ROSE COLORED FLAT EXTERIOR PAINT AND ROLLED IT ON 25 YEARS AGO AND IT'S STILL ON THERE. I DIDN'T PRIME IT EITHER. BECAUSE OF THE SUN AND WEATHER THEY FADE A LITTLE SO I REPAINT AND IT STILL STICKS! I DIDN'T HAVE TO SCRAPE EITHER. I ALSO PAINTED MY GUTTERS WITH IT AND IT'S STILL THERE. SPRAY PAINT NEVER OCCURRED TO ME, YOU WOULD END UP WITH OVER SPRAY ON EVERYTHING ANYWAY. I DID IT ON A SUNNY DAY SO IT WOULD GET WELL DRIED AND DIDN'T NEED TO DO FIFTY DIFFERENT THINGS TO PAINT AND PRIME EVERYTHING. EVERYONE HELD THEIR HEADS LIKE THAT SCREAM PICTURE AND SAID IT WOULD WASH OFF BUT IT'S HOUSE PAINT ALREADY, IT STICKS TO THE SIDING AND DOESN'T WASH OFF! I LIKE LATEX BECAUSE IT CLEANS UP SO WELL. WHEN I REPAINT NEXT TIME IT WILL BE DARK RED AND THEN EVERYONE WILL BlTCH ABOUT IT OXIDIZING! I THINK MOST OF IT'S A MAN THING! GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!

Make sure your door is primed first. Then once that is dry, you will want to find a good quality OIL base outdoor paint . Choose a glossy, semi glossy, satin etc.

Paint the door with a wide (3") brush (i prefer an angled brush), and make sure the brush you purchase is for OIL paint. Clean your brush with mineral spirits when you're finished. Oil paint will last longer and is much more durable for the outside. Paint on a day that will be sunny most of the day to give the paint a good chance to cure.

(rollers would leave those little dimple marks, and you don't want that. My opinion of spray paint is that is is uneven and looks cheap. It looks like a spray painted door when your finished.

YOu may need to chip away the old paint, prime it & then repaint for a nice clean look but someone at the paint store can help you out w/ that.

you should prime it with a good quality metal primer. then finish with a 100%acrylic Latex exterior paint. Latex will hold up/weather Much better than oil based paints!
