Hitting the side of the knee should bring someone down regardless of the size. It also lets a shorter person effectively reach a target. If you are approximately the same size and have the ability to hit them before they take action, palm heel to the nose is quite effective or hit the ears. And of course the adams apple may surprise them.

This isn't video game where you magically hits someone and they goes all dizzy or got stunned for few seconds so you can pull off a combo before uppercut them into lava pool or throw superfireball that knock them off their feet.

There's no most effective area to hit. It all is about timing. In boxing they have a saying "it's not the hard punch that knock you out, it's the one you don't see coming that knock you out"

So if you want to hit and have good result, learn how to throw some combos with light punches such as hit someone in the face twice with left hand the give them a hard right shot into the side when they're inhaling to knock air out of them or throw a hard punch to abs then a uppercut when they're bending over slightly from puch to abs. However you will still need to train for that and boxing is your best bet. A couple months of boxing will do you a lot good.

the best place between the neck and waist for a striking point is the solar plexus, just beneathe the ribcage where your diaphragm (the muscle tissue that helps you breathe) striking there will cause your opponent to lose his breath for a short period of time, but you have to act fast to get in your next attack, other wise he could get back up after a few seconds when he's caught his breath.

but you can also strike near the kidneys, just above the waist and to the backside of the ribcage, or the floating rib, which is the smallest sets of ribs at the bottom of the ribcage just above the "love handles".

sometimes striking the base of the spine in the rear just above the waist can also do some dammage but not for long.

Solar plexus. Neck down and waist up? Hit that, and get what you want, you will most certainly stun the person since he won't be able to breathe. Regardless of how big and muscular he is. Hit that area, and you will gain those seconds of immobility from your opponent.

First I agree with Randy - if you are trained in Martial Arts - you should know to remove yourself from the situation. With that being said...

You are not saying if this is for legal sparring or self defense on the street. If it is legal sparring, in our association you may kick to the head, and kick and punch to the chest area - above the belt only.

If this is for self defense on the street, hitting any pressure point will get them stunned and depending on both of your positions will determine the technique you use to prevent them from attacking back until you can get yourself out of the situation. For the defense you should do what it takes to get out of the situation not stand there and show your martial arts skills.

I think that recognizing you are in a bad envirement and then remove yourself from the danger would be much more valuable to you than where to strike once it is too late. Anybody that trains martial arts should tell you it is the last option you use. Many of the lessons taught are to be aware of your surroundings and where your exit from a confrontation is. You also might consider that one minute in a fight is the cardiovascular equivilent to running 1/2 mile.

I know from fact that if you hit someone in the liver, you will definetly stun the that person right away. However, when you're aiming for the liver, you're gonna have to hit with your left hand, because a person's liver is on the right side. I hope it helps.

The groin area is very sensitive. Hit those balls and any guy no matter how big and strong will go down like Goliath.
