although a chihuahua and a russian wolf hound are so dissimilar, they are the same species. their genetic code is "bred" so that they have distinct qualities.

DNA studies now show that every human being came from the same two parents, but as far as animals go... I do not know.

Actually, technical horses and donkeys are different species. While they are members of the same genus, donkeys are either Equus hemonius, the Asian donkey, or E. asinus, the African donkey. While the term horse actually refers to any of the genus Equus, in the context of common conversation it is the domesticated version, Equus caballus, or the wild, Equus przewalski. Any member of the equine genus is able to crossbreed, however. I'm not sure if this is true of all genera, although it probably is. However, I DO know that felines are able to crossbreed, and so are canines, although the only times this happens is in captivity. I have not seen whether equines will crossbreed naturally or not, but I'd have to guess that they don't and the mule and other crossbreeds (I have heard of zebra-donkey and zebra-horse) mixes are a result of domestication. An interesting note in the hybridization of mammals is that most, if not all, are sterile. They are unable to reproduce another of their kind, thus giving credence to the fact that the parents are not of the same species. However, crossbreeding does indicated a compatability of genes, if that is what you are wondering. Two species ARE able to interbreed, if they are of the same genus, thus they are likely to have a common ancestor that makes their sperm and egg cells compatible enough to fertilize. If they are so closely related, how can you explain that if not through evolution? They can breed, but the offspring are sterile. What would the be the point of creating creatures that are related closely enough to produce offspring, but not offspring that can reproduce themselves?
Also, this might interest you:
A modern branch of taxonomy (the study of relationships between organisms), called numerical taxonomy, uses computers to compare very large numbers of traits without weighting any type of trait—in contrast to the traditional view that certain characteristics are more significant than others in showing relationships. For example, the structure of flower parts is considered more significant than the shape of the leaves in flowering plants because leaf shape appears to evolve much more quickly. Much of the science of taxonomy has been concerned with judging which traits are most significant. If new evidence reveals a better basis for subdividing a taxon than that previously used, the classification of the group in question may be revised. A considerable number of classification changes as well as insights in recent years have been the result of comparisons of nucleic acid (genetic material) sequences of organisms.

How about chimpanzee and bonobos? They are so close that bonobos used to be considered a sub-species of chimpanzee. And technically, both are different species of chimps.

Can you prove that you and I have a common ancestor? It's not easy, and we are the same species. How would you go about proving it? Without proof, do you doubt it?
