That all depends on the energies both people are willing and able to contribute. In most cases it hinders because one of the two in the relationship is not up to it; but, being the hopeless romantic that I am, I still BELIEVE. So if the two are really self-sacrificial types and work on it with all they've got it could be a great love indeed, envied by many; and it would prove that they, not their environment, were in control.

For the most part, it hinders a relationship. You want someone you can see, touch, smell, etc. Now if you are with someone who travels a lot for work, but will come back, I can see it helping because you appreciate the time you spend together.

It depends on the persons involved in the relationship. If both are mature enough and deep in love with each other, distance doesnt matter...rather...it doesnt exist.
Dr. Viktor Frankl, an Austrian Psychiatrist who spent many years in the death camps in WW II era in Germany, kept on living with one purpose - seeing his wife when he got back home from the death camp.
Though he survived his wife, who unfortunately had died in another death camp, without he knowing it, he hoped and wrote imaginary letters to her everyday in his mind.
He admits in his book, "Man's Search for Meaning" that this only purpose kept him alive through most difficult circumstances of his or anybody's life.
That in my opinion was the ultimate test of love. I feel if there is conviction and love distance, circumstances and other extraneous things dont matter. The minds would connect.

It can seem fun at first to have a distant romance, you have all of the great romantic feelings without any of the challenge of actually living together day to day. Eventually a real relationship must be formed and it rarely lives up to the long distant ideal
