It can adversely affect the functioning of neurotransmitters and receptors with extended use. It can affect short term memory and cause delays in action/response. I do not remember if it does or does not destroy cells in the brain...but if it does, it is important to note, brain cells do not regenerate..Although recent developments of a patient coming out of an extended coma suggests otherwise. It can impair cognitive functions although honestly I do not recall if this is due to cell destruction for some other reason. It is important to note that there are indications for marijuana...it is excellent for people who are suffering the nauseating effects of chemotherapy and is also good for people in chronic pain. It is also a effective aphrodisiac and treatment for glaucoma. When looking at medications it is important to weigh both advantages and disadvantages.

I did a fair amount of smoking weed in my younger days and I still managed to get a Master's in Computer Science while working FT and raising a kid and I graduated with a 3.45 average.
So I really don't think that many brain cells got killed. Hey you get light headed when you give blood....that does not mean your brain cells are dead or dying.
Would I do it again, in retrospect, No, it was dumb! Do I think marijuana should be legalized, yes and taxed to death. Did marijuana hurt me - no, not at all.

Marijuana is the most commonly abused illicit drug in the United States.
A name for dry, shredded green/brown mix of flowers, stems, seeds, and leaves of the hemp plant Cannabis sativa.
The main active chemical in marijuana is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). The membranes of certain nerve cells in the brain contain protein receptors that bind to THC
THC connects to specific sites called cannabinoid receptors on nerve cells and influences the activity of those cells. Some brain areas have many cannabinoid receptors; others have few or none. Many cannabinoid receptors are found in the parts of the brain that influence pleasure, memory, thought, concentration, sensory and time perception, and coordinated movement
The short-term effects on brain:-
-problems with memory and learning;
-distorted perception;
-difficulty in thinking and problem solving;
-loss of coordination;
-and increased heart rate(due to brain chemical imbalance, remember that brain also controls the heart).
The long-term effect on brain:-
-some changes in the brain similar to those seen after long-term abuse of other major drugs.
-cannabinoid (THC or synthetic forms of THC) withdrawal in chronically exposed animals leads to an increase in the activation of the stress-response system and
-changes in the activity of nerve cells containing dopamine
-Dopamine neurons are involved in the regulation of motivation and reward, and are directly or indirectly affected by all drugs of abuse.
So to sum up, definitely cannabis / marijuana use has long term brain effects
I just hope facts will silence the "experts"

Yes. It's, in my opinion, one of the less harmful drugs you can do, but the truth remains: drugs of any type will kill brain cells. I smoked pot for years (sometimes I still do) and I promise you it will dull your mind after awhile. Especially if you are young, keep your mind active and your body in good health and you won't need drugs. Just drink! Ha ha ha (kidding on the last part)

I wouldn't say it caused severe brain damage...but I do think it causes a little STML (short term memory loss). My friends and I always joke about our STML. I think people think that b/c the ones whoa re bun-outs have also done other drugs that DO cause soem long term affects to the brain.

In SUPER high doses...a lot more than anyone can even possibly try to smoke...it is a myth and propaganda aimed at perpetuating society's reliance on pharmaceutical companies' products.
Here is data from a study about THC effects on monkey brains: http://www.erowid.org/plants/cannabis/cannabis_myth8.shtml
Besides...alcohol is MUCH more dangerous in so many ways...

Affects your short memory and can definately kill brain cells, if you mix it with alcohol (who doesnt), so... its a fatal combination....especially afterwards, when your body gets used to it and you might end up trying something stronger in one of those moments of weakness...

One would also be likely missing much-needed oxygen, and an idiot could understand that less oxygen=less brain cells.
