I don't understand how eternal marriage can be believed?

On the mormon website it says "The Bible and the Book of Mormon are the word of God." It also says they believe in eternal marriage ( http://www.mormon.org/learn/0,8672,1597-1,00.html ) and quote Matthew 16:19: "And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

But if you read in six chapters later in Matthew 22:29-30 it says:
" Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven"

That is a contradicting in beliefs. So as I see it - you either believe the bible or something that man came up with (like the book of mormon).

Why claim to believe the bible? When it comes down to it - you have to choose between the two books.

So Jesus really meant that those who don't get married in the temple aren't officially married and that's why they aren't given in marriage? Ok - that's what I thought - when I was wacko! C'mon - that doesn't make any sense. God is the one who institued marriage "For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh." I didn't write the book - and I'm not going to change around what it says.

I guess you can go to the bible and prove whatever you want to when you don't come to God with meekness.

"And you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free" The truth about this topic will make mormons free in their lives to live with and for God and to put on the greater reality that God's way is the best way - not going against his word. I'm not going to get a deep understanding of the book of mormon when it contradicts the bible.

Praise God for a sound mind.

Also: How much can someone 'read the story a little better' than(from the bible) "For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven"? This applies to the resurrection. You do err not knowing the scriptures (but you do know the book of mormon) nor the power of God.

One of the main things that separates the Mormon church from other churches is that they have a living prophet who receives continuous revelation for the church. The Book of Mormon is a companion to the Bible, but once God has said one thing it doesn't mean He cannot say anything new. Eternal marriage was revealed after the Book of Mormon in the Doctrine and Covenants.

Look in the chapter heading, it is only to referring to worldly marriages. Eternal marriage is true to believers but only in the highest level of the celestial kingdom of heaven, not the terrestrial or telestial levels of heaven. It is easier to understand the correlation between the Bible and The Book of Mormon if you have a deep understanding of the Book of Mormon first.

Yes it is true
But you must have your spouse sealed to you in the temple
The same way with Baptism Jesus said if we are not baptized we will be damned but it is a free choice nobody forces us to be sealed or baptized

As with everything else outward ordinances will not save if our hearts are not right before God also see www.mormon.org

I was corrected by the Holy Spirit on this subject once. I was new in the Christian faith and a knowledgeable Mormon man just beat me into the ground about marriage in heaven.Later the Spirit ask me in a voice that was almost audible. "Who is my bride?" I actually turned around to see who was talking to me. No one there... Hummm Then the voice came again "Who is my bride?" I know it was God's voice within me I was about to be taught a lesson on marriage directly from my Lord. I whispered my answer. "the Church Lord", " and who is the Church".. I smiled and Thanked God for this message. Now if ever I am asked if I believe in eternal marriage I say "Yes, I'm the bride".. I am a mature 54 year old man 250 lbs 6'3" tall. You should see some of the looks I get :) Jim

I know it's true. I don't think you can have immortality, get a resurrected body and lose your feelings and love.

Marriage is obsolete today.

It was created when people had children at 13, and died at 30.

No use for it in today's society.

First of all, great question. thanks for inquiring and not degrading.

We do believe in sealings or eternal binding to use the language of Matthew. The truth you refer to later in Matthew refers to those who are not sealed or bound by the authority of God to do so. Much like giving out speeding tickets or citations, one who is not a sworn officer of the peace can't do this without being laughed at, much less take the issue before a court of law without it being thrown out--this is a lack of authority--not a matter of contradiction.

As for your statements concerning the Bible and The Book of Mormon. I guess the best way I see it is like a classroom. God is the Teacher and the prophets are the students. The lesson is taught and the students learn, each takes notes, though some add some things and omit others, but they are nonetheless both notes of the same teaching. When you think about the times of both books, remember there were no telephones or high-speed Internet connections. Columbus didn't discover the Americas until 1492, that's more than 1000 years after the Savior came to earth.

I believe the Lord loves us, His children, He has since the dawn of time, scriptures are His teachings to the prophets for all of His children. You're probably aware that we believe in modern day revelation, this is simply a manifestation that the Lord still speaks to His children, He has always spoken to His children--and He always will. It is not a matter of choosing between the Old Testament, New Testament and the Book of Mormon, it is learning from all and finding truth, revealed to us by the Holy Ghost.

It might help to look at the Articles of our Faith, number 8 says: "We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God."

Again, thanks for the great question, I hope I have shared something of value with you.
